it is with shock that once again, biker stabbed 25 times near Irene/ Centurian, luckily he is still alive. what can we do , nothing. We all know that one cannot ride by oneself or even with 2 or 3 other bikers. this is bulls,,,. speaking for myself this is quite difficult,my friend are not always available. should we not origanise our rides in groups, I know there are a few organized rides but I am really concerned that the situation is not going to improve.

Ya, it's k~k, given my tight work schedule, I'm only able to ride at ungodly hours of the morning. Luckily, my riding partner is in the same boat, but it's only two of us.

Just a question here, did the last guy fight back, I'm not saying he should ever have been stabbed even once, but we've agreed that if push comes to shove, then the bike must go in favor of not needing an ambulance to come and fetch us. We're both insured and the idea is if we find ourselves in that situation, then it must be easy for the perps to high-tale it our of there.

Maybe it's because my bike is not particularly high-end, but they can have it if they're willing to come at me with a knife or worse. Should we not make consideration for insurance on our bikes? Surely we'd feel less inclined to fight for them if faced with this situation?

Having said all of the above, I sincerely hope that the above rider recovers quickly. I do think that something needs to be done is out of hand and I'm getting tired of hearing about it.

Sheesh, I hate hearing this. The affirmative shopping is something that could be "borne", although not gladly, on its own. But the fact that these guys become aggressive even when being cooperated with is nonsense. Where do these bikes disappear to? Is there no method of tracing these things?

Here's wishing for a speedy recovery.

the problem is that such bikes or sold by these perps for next to nothing, Do you confront them ? Phone the cops? By the time they arrive the perp is gone. This has stuffed up my week end , don't like reading such articles, but ja we all know the situation

I'm told the syndicate that prowled and preyed at Irene the past 2-3 years has been caught.... hopefully yes, this was a one-time incident and not an "area of opportunity".

That said, the first thing one of the guys at my LBS told me when I started riding again, was to stay away from that area (where the bikejacking took place) precisely due to this reason.

Hope the guy's ok and here's to hoping the attacker gets his balls handed to him on a platter.

You might want to elaborate.

This the work of the devil...how do someone stab a cyclist 25 times. People are heartless It puts fear in me because I am always cycling alone ... this is really scary.

To stab someone once is horrific enough, but to be stabbed 25 times and beaten with a brick is truly a savage attack, and involved more then just stealing the bike. Sad,sad times we live in when you can not even enjoy the things you love. If this was to ever happen to me is the day I give up cycling in SA and go back to my first love, the ocean. At least there I only have a shark to worry about.

I agree Mapa..Work of the devil.Don't ride alone on those roads..but I refuse that fear stop me from biking.. Couple of us did that route next to the railway last saturday.. Muddy it was. But the robbers wait for those easy targets.. the alone riders. Hope the rider gets well soon an make it to the epic finish line.. Good luck.

I have said it before and I will say it again, flame me if you wish, I care not... The current government somehow benefits from the spiraling crime rate, why else will they not put an end to it or at least place some form of priority to curb it? simple they scoring from it!

hatred is what causes a "person" to stab another 25 times, by any other name its racialism, you know it and I know it... but we just wont say it!
