The Froome Dawg Thread

Word is the Sky camp at this years tour is a completely different place to be than last year - far more relaxed and the guys are able to joke around etc. Last year was all business all the time. Same management - (very) different team leader.

Yes good times indeed, Chris hand picked the team according to the pre race Eurosport panel yesterday. Last year they had The Wig Brad threatening to walk after Chris gapped him on that climb (same source) you can imagine the atmosphere of fear after that.

Anyone listen to Cape Talk this afternoon @ 15:30?

They interviewed Dr Ross Tucker (Sports Science) on his views regarding Chris Froome's victory on Saturaday...

Hmmmmmmmm..... Very interesting and highly questionable!

Anything is questionable and in the case of professional cycling its going to be questioned when someone like CF does what he has done so far.

Unfortunate truth is something like this is never clear cut as there are a lot of variables, unknowns and presumptions going on.

The only certainity is that time will tell and i for one hope this time its good news

And here's what Dr Ferrari thinks so far, not revealing much other than his sceptism of some experts...LOL

TdF 2013 - Part I

By: Michele Ferrari

Published: 7 Jul 2013

Chris Froome's uphill performance on the climb towards Ax-3-Domaines spurred the usual schizophrenic comments from "experts" who claim to identify the limits of human performance and to divide the "Good Boys from the Bad Apples."

Those same commentators who have recently stated that "climbing performances are now reduced by 20% (!) compared to 10 years ago", today are forced to revise their self-interested calculations.

On the 8 km 8% gradient ascent, Froome climbed in 21'30", 30" faster than Armstrong (2005) and 10" faster than the Contador - Andy Schleck duo (2010), with a VAM = 1786 m/h = 6.37w/kg.

An extrapolated performance, of course, that does not take account of the drafting and the wind, but that is in line with the efforts expressed in training from Froome and Porte on the climb of the Col de la Madone, a week before the start of the Tour: a reported time of "under 31min", with 6.6 w/kg.

"The race is already over, team Sky is the strongest, there is nothing we can do", was the chorus of comments, Marc Madiot at the helm.

Instead, the following morning there were those who decided to move the challenge from power to resistance: team Garmin, heavily defeated the day before, set the race on fire since the beginning and already on the first climb ALL of team Sky (except Froome) got into serious trouble (too much turbo-trainer before the start, perhaps...?).

Attacks and and counter-attacks followed one another: the race was burning, like the legs of the riders: 80 km from the finish, with Peyresourde, Val Louron and La Hourquette still to climb, Froome was hopelessly alone, surrounded by 6 Movistar and 5 Saxo, all of whom incredibly failed to take advantage of this unique opportunity to put the English rider in the wind, eventually chasing each other, with Froome on their wheel.

The five ascents of the day (total of 3500m of climbing) were all well done above 5 w/kg, for a total of about 2h30min of M-S effort, resulting in an hourly consumption of more than 1200 Kcal, a pace that only those with the best endurance were able to maintain.

Apparently a red flag was raised when BikePure tried to be affiliated the the Dawg. They sent him an email requesting stats and blood passport figures to which Froome never responded. Turns out BikePure had an old email address of his so the info actually never got through to him and his bosslady.

Ammo for the naysayers im sure.

And (this is an assumption) Team Sky might not allow CF to release the data anyway?

Naysayers (thanks for the word choice Morpheus) will always find something to nay about....

VeloNews: Froome declined to release his power numbers publicly, why?

Dave Brailsford: It’s an interesting question. There is so much pseudo science out there right now. If you release the data, there are very few people who can properly interpret and understand that data. All you’re going to do is create is a lot of noise for people who are pseudo scientists. You can even write magazines about it. They’re so wide of the mark in what they’re doing, it’s quite scary. You can do anything with stats. You can use that with a cynical view.

Froome had to meet me at a party a good few years back, he was with his brother Jeremy.

He called me on the way to say he will be late, they have called him to give a sample (he was still living at his dads house)

When they arrived the person doing the testing asked which one of the two was Chris.

As much as the athletes might make an honest mistake or two, so do these clowns.
