OK...so got the bike back from CWC this evening....after driving around the ENTIRE day looking for a press fir shimano bearing that will fit it (its trek specific)...NO-ONE has it...not bearing man/bearings international etc etc. A big thank you to cycle lab westlake where we finally found one (after going to various cycle chops/cyclelabs in CT)

Bike had a bearing setup for sram (2 different size bearings)...and with the change to shimano it needed the shimano version......gave me headaches the entire day. The standard press fit bearings are 0.5mm too small...it creaks when you ride and the CWC mechanic guys werent happy.......had to go find these damn things

Turned out well in the end though

now if i can just convince cyclelab to get me the duotrap sensor that i asked for about 3 weeks ago and that they told me would take 2 days to get there!!

yep.....was originally setup for a sram crank...hence the 2 different size BB bearings. We had to remove the one and put in another shimano crank bearing.....beware if you need these things, most cyclelabs (the trek stockists) dont have.

yep antoo....discovered that after i went searching....that was my next option (and i was on the point of ordering too.....)from what i could make out (and if no-one in CT had...rushsports are the only other lot in SA who have them)

Those are proprietary bearings with a very shady origin. Originally Trek had standards bearings in there and then the creaking started. Instead of doing a mass recall and changing their BB shell to accommodate real bearings, they decided to make everyone's life hell and invent something proprietary. The last one of those I saw was a standard bearing with a thin brass shim crimped onto it.

This doesn't bode well for our industry. Specialized is the ultimate perpretator of proprietary stuff and I foresee trouble for Spez owners in South Africa. If you want to be proprieary, you better have your supply chain in order and this they don't. I advise people to stay away from products with proprietary parts - Spez, Trek, Ghost...the list is growing.

Just a comment on JB's statement about proprietry parts(not a dig), Specialized use a pressfit BB30 system on their bikes, nothing special, they have proprietry rear suspension systems but you can use any fork you want...in general that is about all...

Trek are probably a little worse with their seatpost systems on some of their models as well as the BB systems they use.

Manufacturers use propietry parts to improve the way the bike works be it comfort, suspension action, etc that is why Cannondale held on to the (first the headshock) lefty and BB30 system for so long....even now their lefty fork uses a propietry stem system...

I don't know about always having an improvement, because most times it feels like they're only doing it to make money. Kind of what Apple is doing where you have to buy every new upgrade, because everything on older models isn't compatible.

Of course its to make more money! because every bicycle would be the same, cellphones would be the same, cars would all be a model t ford...its called progress and survival of the strongest...Innovate or die...

My point was that they're not necessarily improving, only changing so that you can't use old parts on new bikes...
