To all the organisers of the various events for this weekend (and whenever): Why not get in touch with the people behind the Burry Stander FB page / his sponsors / team mates / family and volunteer to assist with organising the 'local chapter' of the ride for him?

It will merely dilute the effect of the rides. Lots of people will attend the 'wrong' event, hence the call for one (possibly nationwide), properly organised and published event. Why not leave this to the people who were really close to Burry, rather than creating a lot of splinter groups?

To those who are organising/attending the rides this weekend (tonight even), what are you hoping to accomplish with the ride? Awareness, I hear? What / where / how / who with?

For what its worth a protest ride closing down Jan Smuts avenue and other roads is not going to get the support we want for safer cycling causes.

It will merely irritate motorists more than they are and further allienate them and create more tention between motorists and cyclists.

Petitions and getting the media more involved will do more.

And perhaps if we arrange a mass demonstration outside the African National Criminals offices at Lithuli house will have more effect.

So what we should be doing is getting everyone we know to vote against the ANC.

If that fails burn their buildings down because that's the only language the ANC understand.

We are cyclists and one of our own has been taken away from us. I like the idea of multiple rides organised by whoever wants to. I will make myself available for all of them irrespective of how many other people are there. The stature of Burry is such that we could do memorial rides once a week for the rest of the year and we'll still feel the raw pain we feel this day knowing how avoidable it is to have lost him the way he was taken.

Yes, let's get a massive nationwide effort going and this will need time, but allow those who want to grieve and process this the opportunity to do it to.

See the CT chaps at Green Point tonight!

Listen buddy, now is not the time for showing political colors. Im in Cape Town where the DA rules, and people are killed here as well. So put a sock in it. We need action yes, but causing chaos, or property damage doesn't serve anyone's interest. What happens next is that every cyclist becomes a target.

Apply for a protest action, get a police and traffic escort, even determine the route or routes. Have one finishing point, burn a candle, say a prayer. We trying to make a point, not make enemies. CSA or PPA in Cape Town ad other bodies, clubs all need to get in on this. Ad hoc events will just dilute the effort. If we can all work to a date, maybe the day he is laid to rest, and then give all the major cities an opportunity to organize something substantial, we will gain more, the media will take note, and also we get the exposure and awareness of cycling safety we are trying to achieve. I survived a car crashing into me, and broken leg, arm, shoulder, 3 ribs and concussion later I still ride.

Lets do this right, all hands on deck, common purpose.

My two cents and then some.

Quite correct

It also has to do with a little matter called RESPECT for the families wishes

moonlight mass at night is 'convenient', as more often than not, rules of the road go far out the window on these rides. I just hope our well meaning intentions this evening around the back end of peak hour (still a crap of vehicles in and out of the city, especially in sea point) dont reveal the hypocrisy when it comes to riders respecting the rules of the road while demanding the same and more from motorists.

Guys, whats happening in Durbs, couple hubbers asked but no comment,is any organised mass ride taking place in KZN, i think whenever as long as it is peak hour to bring the traffic to a standstill for an hour, lets do this, RIP Burry

Why Friday night. Why not make it Friday morning. Everyone who owns a bike should be there. I'll even tey fly up. It needs to be big.

Then CSA, Supercycling, pro riders, celebrities, politicians, need to be riding at the front. Coverage on Supersport and evening news.

But that must just be the start. People on the Hub who have money, political clout, any kind of influence, need to lobby Govt for stricter penalties against people who knock over cyclists, esp. hit and run drivers. That must be the end-goal.

We all need to take the lead here. We can't leave it up to CSA, etc. (Although it is fully expected of them - at the very least).

Come join the Durban ride - 20h00 at Moses Mabhida Stadium Saturday 5 Jan

I don't get this train of thought. How do you feel when protesters for something obscure and meaningless to you hold you up in some attempt to draw attention to your plight?? Do you really chill out and consider their perspective or are you simply annoyed to the point that you never give them another passing thought purposely?

I get the mass idea, I don't get the taking over the whole streets and hold up people, annoying them to prove a point extra. This will defeat the whole exercise and actually goes entirely against the humility of the man that was Burry Stander.

Do the right thing. You know what it is.

i have not read the entire thread,i feel that instead of 10 small protests we should have 1 proper protest

idea : we can all ride to the union buildings and deliver a protest/message to government and the guys in Cape Town can at the same time ride to parliment and deliver the same message.
