To all the organisers of the various events for this weekend (and whenever): Why not get in touch with the people behind the Burry Stander FB page / his sponsors / team mates / family and volunteer to assist with organising the 'local chapter' of the ride for him?

Agreed.

As kranswurm said, we need to show respect for the grieving family and close friends in this difficult time.

Please coordinate your events with the facebook page. Surely you don't want to exclude his very close friends from participating because you got the timing all wrong.

My two cents on these mass rides:

1. As mentioned by someone else already, these rides should be organised one per city by a more official means, such as by Burry's facebook page (which I presume is already the actual case) rather than there being a dozens of little rides with a small Ineffectual group in each.

2. Also, rather than angering motorists by blocking roads and causing tensions to rise, as cyclists we should actually try to use this tragedy to raise awareness to cyclists and our safety while at the same time honouring a cycling legend.

To do the legend proud we need to organize correctly, so it's not a simple rush effort, and a real MASS ride so as the dutchies say "hastig née wees nie " we need to be organized

I agree.... dont rush this and please let us not have "just another ride"... the traffic / people should REALLY SEE US so that they can ask what the hell is going on... if were just a bunch of cyclists we will go UN NOTICED and we will just frustrate the odd motorist. In my opinion we should wait 2 weeks or so, get this really organized, get traffic department, get CSA, get PPA, and the rest... and well be the biggest turnout ever !!! Please hubbers the time is now ! CSA please help this course and let the country know who was killed !!!

This should become a advert on supersport / supercycling like the MTN quebeka one... let's make this happen !

We ABSOLUTELY have to have a major all out in every city simultaneous ride to show the country how we feel about this. Lets take the time to allow this to be organised.

However we also are hurting today and want to do something about that today. Let those who want to gather today to figure out how to deal with this, do it.

I for one think it would carry so much more weight to see many smaller rides getting in front of non cyclists in a build up to a really large event. Who knows how many people that are not avid cyclists yet, that decide to join on the day of the big ride simply because they see ongoing rides in the lead up to it. Therein lies the ultimate win. The easiest way to change people's attitude to cyclists is to get them involved in riding a bike too. Hope the organizers of the mass event figure out a way to get the message beyond the cycling fraternity and each of us do our bit to try and drag just one non cyclist down with us on the day!

Some asked about what is being done in Durban.

We are waiting on details for the official ride to be announced by Burry Stander's Facebook page

Critical Mass DBN have been doing rides on every quarter moon as part of an enhanced 'Moonlight Mass' during the holidays. These have been averaging around 150+ the last few weeks. Most of our group have expressed that they will be riding this Saturday's '3rd Quarter Moon Mass' for Burry.

HOWEVER, please note that this isn't an official memorial ride, just that it happens to be a ride already organised that people seem to be joining as it's a social city ride at a very slow pace. There is no police involvement or any kinda of road closure for this as the point of the ride has always been to encourage safe urban commuter bicycling and highlight the need for infrastructure to support this. By it's nature and definition (as well as for liability reasons) Critical Mass organisation is very loose.. It is literally just a bunch of bicyclists meeting at a point and deciding to ride somewhere together. (Lights and helmets are encouraged but not everyone adheres to these rules)

I will be joining the JHB ride tonight at 6pm, but will also join should a national scale ride be organized.

Whatever ride you choose gents, please please please remember why we do this. For awareness and to honour our hero. Getting annoyed with taxis and or vehicles will only make the situation worse.

Lets keep it clean.

RIP Burry

Where are you CSA, organize this and show you care. Let this needless tragedy be the start of something good.

Any statement from them anywhere?

somehow (yes without full internet access at the office) none of these seem to have any 'official' status. Let us wait for the family and friends to deal with their personaly tragedy and loss and first do what must be done, and THEN we help to organise/attend a protest ride in the fullest sense of the word!

No official body will just jump in and organise a ride in memory for Burry without consulting his family (and maybe organise it for a greater cause: safety and/or songo.info, whatever THEY deem worthy and applicable), so please lay off the pressure on PPA/CSA/CGC/whoever. Allow them to get to grips with the situation first.

If anybody feels that officialdom is moving to slowly why not contact them and volunteer to assist, rather splintering and diluting what should be a massive country-wide concurrent protest & memorial.

And please do not try and politicize their/our loss!

No official ride as yet, but if people want to ride let them ride.

I am sure they will also ride if and when an official ride is organised
