How would you enforce point 1, you need a camera shot as proof not a "i saw"

Point 2 is very easy to navigate around, plenty of cars riding round with illegal plates, whats to stop me from making one up and fitting it to my bike. Who is going to stop me to verify that the number displayed is indeed mine, only the authorities can not joe public.

Sure, but now we are looking at the SA mentality of evading issues they dont agree with. In most first world countries people accept laws as a pre requisite to their been able to partake in that activity and abide by those laws, here regrettably, we look for ways to evade them.

Was looking at more @&&&@ bag roadies skip a traffic light and it got me thinking..

We need to identify and shame and possibly fine these types of people?

But we have no way of identification. It should be law to have some sort of registration and mini license plate on a bicycle.

That kills 2 birds...

1 we can identify and fine people who break the law and

2 we can immediately spot a stolen bike or even match a owner to a license plate?

Lets say the remoteness of some locations is NOT a problem...

Questions:

1. Licensing disk info are not generally available (only to law enforcement). This does not stop drivers from breaking the law, does it?

2. How will a disk on a bike flag the bike as stolen? It is not as if stolen motor vehicles have flashing lettering on their plates

Also, how to afix said disk to modern bicycles? sticking it on with some sort of glue/epoxy (what happens in case of transfer of ownership, non-payment, etc or will some 'appie' drill holes into carbon / titanium / other exotic materials? If this, how will that affect warranties?

It sounds a lot like a nice to have and not a solution to wanton disregard for road rules by ALL road users.

GOG, that is the exact problem. Attitudes. If our (all of us in the sunny old R of SA) attitudes were better then there will be no need for a call to put number plates on bicycles. And if our attitudes were better we will put those same disks/plates on our bicycles.

Somehow, somewhere (at home and in school) we need to bring about a change in attitudes. Cannot force a change in attitude by more laws/rules.

It is a very good idea ! I saw a comment made on a motorbike site that bicycles does not have the same rights as other vehicles because they are not licensed . And this is true , even that donkey cart you see going down Koeberg in Paarden Eiland got to be licensed !!

Have you ever reported any road user? I have and nothing happens to that person.

Look for the route cause if the problem.

a friend of mine received a huge bound booklet on driving responsibly from the traffic dept. and a warning letter after someone reported him driving recklessly (doing donuts on pvt property) but anyway! So they do in rare cases attempt to do something.

Once (on some crazy driver that was bound to kill someone).... and 5 minutes later 4 cops came flying past me.

Won't work. Will only be another form of income for the goverment.

If it was an easy ,effective and cheap license to get and put on, I won't mind. If it's like getting a car license, then I don't even want to bother.

Also I can't see the larger of the bicycle commuter comunity paying for a license.

BTW: Will a bicycle be checked for road worthyness? What will the criteria be?

That is nonsense. The goverment states that we have the same rights and the goverment decided that cyclist do not need to pay a license fee.

Plus all those cyclist have all car and have paid a license fee they are just using another vehicle which is except from a license fee so the motorbikes are talking nonsense.

In order for this to work, the licence has to be the same size as a car plate or else a camera / bystander wont be able to see it.

Car licences are linked to engine / VIN numbers. Bikes dont have these numbers so it will be very easy to make false ones.

Most people (myself included) will rather just ride without the license because they couldnt be arsed with the admin.

WE need to get rid of this mentality where we expect the government to solve all our problems. It starts with us - not them.

And you think that CSA or PPA, with their limited resources and staff, are going to should regulate this. Ok, think of the logistics, how many working commuters do you have in the townships, if they dont need to get it, where do you draw the line on who has to get it then and who does not. Who will enforce this appon me and what can they do to me if I dont have one? If you say that if you don have one you cannot enter races, well, most of the people breaking traffic laws, so again back to square one.

All this will do is put in another law, that will not be obayed and more admin for Institutes that cannot cope.

Bottom line, you start being the change and obay all traffic laws, on your bike and in your vehicle.

Agree, having a license plate fixed to your bicycle won't help. Just have a look at all the traffic offences seen daily on our roads. We need to change our attitude and show lots and lots more respect on our roads.

OMG this is like arguing with my 4 year old !!!!! Take your finger out of your nose and start using that one brain cell you got from somewhere !

1. Register all bycicles then at least somebody got a record of the stuff

2. Enforce the law like they currently enforce all other laws . So they don't but it still is a law . One day when somebody decides to take action the LAW is there .

3. Add other benefits as you see fit !

I agree that we don't need to wear special numbers or bike number plates, etc. If this really worries anyone, get together and approach the authorities to enforce the traffic laws, the infrastructure for this exists, albeit in a corrupted state. That way, all road users will at some stage get caught for traffic act contraventions and only then will the roads eventually become safer. Unfortunately we are not up to EU standards, this remains Africa, our president is a sad reminder these days when he opens his mouth to change feet.

At the Druiwefees on Saturday, a traffic vehicle is holding traffic back just before Bela Bela and the bicycles are passing left but some *&^% baboon (apologies to the real baboons) decides he is too important and overtakes all the cars on the RHS, partly off the road. Don't know if the cop did anything, as we were passing him as this happened but I doubt he has the gonads for any action.

We all blame the cyclists, taxis, truck drivers, etc. for the way they drive and they drive like that because they can. I commute between Pretoria & Jhb each working day and I don't see the traffic cops anymore, so where are they hiding? They can't all be stopping cars at OR Tambo. Incidently, have R 30 bucks in your ID in case you roll over the parking lot stop line. Eish, it says STOP.

Its the African way.
