Great pic! Have a look at this article:

http://www.vitalmtb.com/product/guide/Bikes,3/Ibis/Mojo-SL-R,11762

I love Ibis and would buy their bikes in a heartbeat, but honestly, I know of too many broken frames , not just locally , but all over the web...At this price point I'm not willing to take the risk.

Following Up

With our experiences behind us, we reached out to Ibis for a comment about the potential issue, and what they had found after looking at our test bikes:

"There's a saying, 'Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.'

We have not had a lot of problems in the field with the SL-R, there are thousands out there and a relatively small number of warranty issues, approximately 1%. We now know what happened on your bikes. The rear shock reducer hardware and Ti bolt on both bikes you sent back were bent. This changed the bottom out point of the suspension, which in turn caused the other issues you saw. Although we haven't seen failures like this, in the past we have seen bent hardware with aggressive riders and we were able to solve it by substituting a high strength steel shock shaft for the standard aluminum version. Your test bikes did not have the steel shaft. We have made a running change in our spec to the steel shaft, which will eliminate this issue.

Realistically, the Mojo HD would probably be a better choice for riders that generate these kinds of loads, but then it probably wouldn't have been the lightest bike in the test. In other words, we brought a knife to a gun fight." -- Scot Nicol, Ibis Cycles Founder and Co-Owner

Hardtails ... this is what they should look like.

Huh? How do you get that? (Other than being facetious). 4 Ibis later and not a single problem on one of them. Plus their after-sales CC is of the best, if not THE BEST, in the business.

OK. Having never owned an Ibis, I based my comments on conversations I had with friends who did and still do own Ibis bikes. Between the 3 of them: 1 never had a problem, 1 had 2 frame replacements, and the other guy had 1 frame replacement.

Mikes Bikes who used to be a dealer for Ibis also strongly advised me against anything remotely to do with Ibis.

These "third party" experiences coupled with the Vital MTB article obviously did nothing for my personal opinion of Ibis bikes.

I'm glad you never had a problem, and from what I've heard, Ibis really do have fantastic customer service. ( And as I stated earlier; they do make beautiful bikes.)

Enjoy your bike, I'll see you on the trails!  :)

Cedric Gracia on Enduro:

For sure. Right now we’ve got the Enduro World Series, and it’s going to be huge all over the whole world. My sponsors don’t even want to hear about downhill anymore. It’s just such a small market for them. Enduro is a market that can actually support the industry.

Things are coming back now in terms of sponsorship because of enduro. Mountain biking is changing. Downhilling is great – you know, for the young kids it’s got a cool image – but you don’t sell many of those bikes at all. Enduro is all about guys my age, from 25 to 45. People who have jobs and a family, they make money and they just want a ******* cool bike to go hang out with their friends on the weekend. And you don’t need a lift. You don’t need anything. I understand that. That’s where mountain biking is going. And the sponsors understand that too.

This pretty much lines up with what all trail/all mountain riders have been doing for years.  But it is cool that there is a specific racing discipline now, because it speeds up the development of better faster and more reliable products.

in CT?

Yip! Check Duane's uplift  schedule, we'll try and be there ( Steilte & Jonkershoek) on the same days. Garden Route trails from 13 to 19 December, and Steilte / Jonkershoek from the 20th until after New Year (5/6 Jan 2015). Keep a eye on "Mountainbikers do it downhill" on FB, we will post the dates there.
