Looking around on buycycle and came across the Shimano AM45 and MP66 at good prices, however cant find much that compares them to the Five-Tens, so any experiences with the two and any comments or suggestions?

They are fairly similar platforms and are quite stiff. I have the AM45's and they have been very good to me when clipping in. I personally would want to run them as a pure flat peddle shoe as I would find them to be too stiff (that said, I haven't tried them on pure flats).

Probably 90-95% of the DH bunch who clip in (that is most of the riders) wear one of these two models, so these shoes have been thrashed and take the punishment very well.

Are you going with cleats? If so then 5.10's Stealth is not really necessary. MP66 and AM45 are both good SPD options.

Im in two minds. I have always ridden with cleants and feel more comfortable, however after shattering my foot a year ago i am a bit nervous to ride clipped in as i find on my road bike i struggle to get un-clipped at times.

I've you've always ridden clipped in you'll most likely hate riding flats. At least initially. Maybe don't spend a lot of $ on something you might hate. Rather borrow a set of flats from a mate and ride a trail you are very comfortable on to see if you can deal with the float and that "not attached" feeling before shelling out for flats & 5.10's

I raced road quite seriously for 15 years and went straight onto mtb cleats for the last 10 but I'm loving my flats and 5.10s.

Sure. Sure. But that's you. I'm also all about flats. But after riding clipped in for many years he will in all probability not enjoy his first encounter on flats. Nothing wrong with a tester is all I'm saying.

Looked what just popped up on PinkBike...

Edit: I don't agree with all the points he makes (he's obviously pro clips) but it does give you an opinion. This issue has been trashed out on the Hub before so just do a search for more opinions. Then make a decision based on what you think will be best for you.

Yeah. Agree. But you also have to give it a week or two to adjust. Took me a couple of days just to get the bunnyhop sorted :D. Pedalling with flats took two weeks.

+1

You will never enjoy flats if you don't ride with them for quite a bit of time! I say a decent set of flats and shoes + two weeks riding almost everyday (short fun rides), then decide.
