I would stay away from any kind of sweeteners, artificial or natural during induction to LCHF. Give yourself a week without any sweetener in the coffee and you will not miss it after that. Learn to really enjoy your cuppa, savour the aroma and enjoy the creamy velvet of a real cream topping. I do not drink a lot of coffee, on average maybe 2 mugs per day, but I really spoil myself by buying good quality coffee and experimenting with different coffees from all over the world. Have you tried the bulletproof coffee yet?

I'm weening myself  Today I had 1/2 a spoon of xylitol instead of 1 spoon. Hopefully by next week I can go without.

I also only drink 1-2 coffees a day.

Pardon my ignorance, but I've never heard of bulletproof coffee

Also, I just thought I'd share that for the last few months I've had a very bad case of urticaria on my face and neck. I've been on numerous courses of cortisone. It clears up with the cortisone and then promptly reappears when I go off the medication.

Today is day 5 of LCHF and my hives are fading, actually almost completely gone!

google or search this thread will reveal all

in short, it's a mix of coffee with some or all of the following added ... coconut oil, flax seed oil, salt, cream, butter.

It's not for the feint hearted and everyone seems to have their own recipe/variant that works for them.

basic idea is to have this first thing in the morning to give your body LOTS of fat to use during the day. depending on what you put in it, can end up with 1000 calories in one cup!

If you want to try it, I suggest you start slow with coffee, cream, 1 tsp coconut oil and a little salt ...

Bulletproof coffee is a way that a lot of us use to kickstart our day and to get a healthy dose of your daily fat intake early in the morning. I am sure every one makes his own version, but just google "bulletproof coffee". I make mine with good coffee, organic virgin coconut oil from Crede oils and homemade farm butter. You brew your normal cuppa and then add about 20 ml of oil and about a heaped teaspoon of good quality butter. Use one of these little bullet mixers to mix well and create a creamy thick froth on top. I don't add salt since my homemade butter is lightly salted, and I find more salt spoils the taste. If I run out of butter I use cream instead.

Edit: Sorry Dale did not see your post.

Hi,

so in the quest to try new ways of getting my 'fat kicks' I tried peppermint tea ( woolworths ) with full cream cream and coconut fat yesterday...

Surprise surprise was pleasantly palatable, will be mixing this with my morning 'bulletproof' coffee as a variation for breakfast from time to time now.

What do I do when I'm craving chocolate? I'm not hungry at all, but I just want chocolate!!!!!!

Eat a sausage.

Or buy the 85 % Lindt and have 2 squares with a cup of coffee. Proper coffee of course.

Ok, this thread is definitely missing something .... a discussion on chocolate.

Dark chocolate (in moderation) seems to get the nod from almost everyone in the Paleo & LCHF community ... even my cardiologist says I should be having some "for medicinal purposes!"

We all know Lindt and Frey make a reasonable dark chocolate product, but they are very definitely mass market offerings. Anyone got any other suggestions on good - I mean REALLY good - handmade or boutique style chocolate?

In CT we have DV chocolates, made at Fairview wine estate, who make a very nice range of single origin bean products at around 75%.

Also found Von Gesau (Franschoek, iirc) make a very nice product. They have a bunch of flavours, espresso and salt are my favourites.

So, who has other suggestions for us to try??

Whenever someone from my girlfriend's family comes over from Germany I get them to bring me some Lindt 99%, but when that is finished it is back to 85%.

You can get the 95% from PnP - clearly they don't sell much cause it was on special last month.

In Braamfontein on Saturdays is the Neighbour Goods Market, when I was there a few months back there were people their selling raw chocolate. They say raw because they don't expose the ingredients to high temperatures while making it and thus "retaining" its nutrients. I'm not sure on the cacao% is but that chocolate sure was delicious! (I only had it once and my taste buds might have changed since then so don't take my word.)

Found their website: http://www.fineandraw.co.za/home.html

and the story: http://www.foodwithastory.co.za/View-Business/412/Fine--Raw-artisan-chocolate

They have 78% and a 83% (with cacao nibs) in 54g bars as well as others. http://www.fineandraw.co.za/buy.html

Should be able to purchase it around the country.

Easy workaround for chocolate cravings:

Buy yourself some Nomu Skinny Hot Choc at PnP (the Skinny is sweetened with sucralose and is REALLY low GI and low cal, it contains no sugar).

Take half a cup (or more) of cream or greek yoghurt, add a heaped teaspoon of Nomu Skinny powder, stir well and in under a minute you have something that resembles chocolate mousse, tastes like chocolate, is sweet and has ample fat.

Simple but elegant solution.

Otherwise eat Lindt in moderation. Please check the labels carefully, I know some of the upmarket stores sell "Dark Belgian Chocolate" but that is absolutely sugar-laden where Lindt is not.

Yep, I've tried their stuff. Pretty good, but pricey - R40 a bar?
