Hi

I am in the market for new gps device.

Been using Polar cs 400.

What would you recommend?

Cheers

Stick with your Polar CS400

Suppose it depends why u want to go gps?

I've got a polar CS400 and an Edge 500, bloody gps only works when there is sky above... I ride thru a lot of forested areas and then it loses the signal and the polar just keeps on working.....

Garmin Edge500, great software out there if you want to utilise it fully, had a Bryton and don't like the web interface. Spares is also a lot cheaper

Powercal is not accurate - not much use as a power meter.

Rather go with a Garmin.

The Powercal (HeartRate strap) seems to be pretty accurate! Specially when you compare averages over the duration of the ride. There are seldom more than a 5% difference between the powercal hr strap and a powertap, on average.

The difference is much more noticeable when doing intervales or sprints. There is a 5 to 10 second lag in HR when kicking out the power. But instantanious on the powertap hub or crank.

When it comes to the gps unit itself.

Again, Garmin wins hands down!

Garmin is just much more userfriendly.

The Joule seems too finiky and not userfriendly enough to customise it the way I would like.

Luckily the Powercal HR is Ant+ and works perfectly with Garmin.

If you dont want to spend R15k plus on a powertap, dont worry much about that precise output number initially but still want a good idea of your power output and you are in the market for a new HR strap anyway, Powercal is the way to go!

Retailing at R1395 (2 in stock), its a great power tool for the professional amature!

PM if you want one!

I continued using my polar but still looking for a gps unit.

But why would I buy the edge 500 or bryton 50 if it doesnt show maps when riding

I have an Edge 800 and never looks at the maps while riding. I'd much rather watch the scenery and/or terrain!

The whole purpose of the gps for me is to download maps of training routes in my area and then follow them on the gps

Just for the record-i did the first Dusi2C earlier this year and we did it with GPS only.

The maps were downloaded from the sight and off we went.

Not a single team got lost but there was a few wrong turns on day 1 but it was a huge success.

I'm pretty sure that stage racing will swing this way in the near future,so if you have the extra bucks go for the Garmin 800 or one that can download maps.
