awesme Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 officially.... correct, but he is still African. G The flag next to his name is the UK flag, isn't it.Officially then, no.
'Dale Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 officially.... correct, but he is still African. G I think the official version is what will reflect in thir record books.Of course, Froome Dawg is a homeboy.
eeeek Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Tricky one, born in Africa but in a British colonial country... I'd say yes, he is african also, G So would I, grew up in Africa, went to school in Africa, studied in Africa, he maintains residence in Africa, trains in Africa, and I'm fairly certain that he was the holder of a Kenyan passport (anyone can varify?). Not so with Virenque.
Uni Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 My boss asked me yesterday if I was watching wimbledon - told him no, it's TDF time and I went off telling him how awesome it is. So he decided to watch the highlights yesterday - hahaaa - as I walked in he excitedly told me about Impey winning the stage yesterday - busy trying to explain to him now why Impey is in yellow even though as he says "some german dude" crossed the line first. Tumbleweed Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Interesting comment there. I wonder how many pros would change their bikes if they had a free will in choosing their own bike There has been talk of top riders using a bike other than their sponsors', but they're rebranded to the sponsors' livery. gummibear 1
kosmonooit Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Chris has a British passport thanks to his father as far as I know, its really just a matter of convenience, but dont think he has spent much time there in 'ole Blighty at all. Anyone remember Zola Budd?
awesme Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Ye, did she not have the same situation. she now stays in the states I believe, use to be in Bloem for long time. G Chris has a British passport thanks to his father as far as I know, its really just a matter of convenience, but dont think he has spent much time there in 'ole Blighty at all. I was born with a British passport; I got a Kenya passport when I was about 18 to represent Kenya in the Commonwealth Games – that was not the way to go." - Chris Froome 2008http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/riders/2008/interviews/?id=chris_froome_nov08
hayleyearth Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 that is exactly my point.....if Froome would have been claimed as the 1st African then....then he was actually not, due to that French dude who was born in Casablanca and lived there for the 1st few years of his live. So yes, I think all the news people got it wrong...well the ones saying "1st African born" (or something like that). The should go with the flag that is against the cyclist name, not where he was born..... As far as I know (it works like this for most sports), once you played/raced for a certain country you cant go and race/play for another country at world level. Or am I wrong? (So Froome will never be able to ride under African colours again..)

(So Froome will never be able to ride under African colours again..) You used to be able to, but in most sports, not any more. Tiaan Strauss played rugger for SA and Aus. Hansie even played for Ireland at one stage*. *I stand corrected, but I don't know if that Ireland side was considered an international team because it was in a county competition…
dracs Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Who would have ever thought that this would happen?hehe I also took that photo - its my desktop for the day...
nickc Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 There has been talk of top riders using a bike other than their sponsors', but they're rebranded to the sponsors' livery. I wonder who they are - imagine if that came out the *** it would cause !! Don`t worry Dale - Sagan is not one of them, he has a specialy sized frame Cannondale build for him !!
kosmonooit Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 It depends, about your current citizenship or what passport you hold, not really where you are born. Olympics selection is quite strict, the rest, what suits then, its a very opportunistic scenario. Zola Budd is a case in point: boere mesie who got given a British passport due to some distant ancestor so she could compete in the LA Olympics (barefoot nogal) when there was a sports boycott of SA.
