wow you guys are in for an awesome time. Do you need a bike washer?

The place we are staying at has a pressure washer. But thanks for the offer.

So only 2 sleeps to get your deposits in boys.

It is now clear to me that with the goal posts moved forward I will not recover from my set back in time. It's going to take a few months to get my cash flow back up. 2015 I guess.

Sorry to hear this. Your name has been changed accordingly ;)

How about a masseur?

How about a masseur?

Yeah there's space for one of those. But much like the epic you have to pay to be a masseur on this trip. The cost is 22k. That includes flights, accommodation, lift passes and shuttle to and from Geneva.

Sadly you'll have to supply your own massagy stuff.

Keen?

Bikebag or Cardboard Box?

Cardboard Box.

  • It doesn't cost 3k
  • a bikebag will get wrecked
  • It's not worth buying one for one trip
  • Cardboard is light (VERRRY IMPORTANT)
  • You can start a nice fire with it when you get home.

What is the weight limits? Bike + luggage.

What is the weight limits? Bike + luggage.

30kg checked luggage (That's going to be your boxed bike) and 7kg carry on. I carry my helmet in my hand too.

Your boxed bike should weigh around 21kg (That's a DH bike)

Then you drop in Your pack with a spare derallieur, hanger, spare tube, multi tool, pedal spanner, tire levers and any other tools you need to get your bike back together. Now we're up to 24kg. Then you drop 5kg worth of kit and clothes. leave 1kg just in case

For your carry on you put in a kit, kneepads and riding shoes (your bike might not show up so you might rent one there. You will want to ride) there rest of the 7kg you throw in other clothing. Use the lightest bag you can find. Normal rules around aerosols apply.

In your helmet bag you have your helmet (duh) 2 pairs of gloves your go pro and goggles.

You wear your heaviest shoes (might be your riding shoes) and your waterproof jacket. BTW I just take 2 pairs of 5.10's along for walking and riding. Also if it's wet you can leave the one pair in the ski boot drier and go riding in the other pair.

DONT!

  • DONT go over. They will nail you and I will be the first oke to say told you so. Plus it's R600 per kilogram. Rather buy a pair of new jeans there. It will be cheaper.
  • DONT use a trolley bag for carry on. Even the lightest ones weigh 3kg
  • DONT think you can get away with a smile. Overweight is a major revenue spinner for the airlines
  • DONT bother with all your hipster gear. The girls in Morzine are fat & ugly so you don't need to look cool.

If you follow these easy guidelines 30k plus 7kg carry on will be more than enough. Also. Try to hook up with a mate and share weight. a pedal spanner and tire levers for instance. Try spread that weight.

I've done 23kg checked luggage before so no excuses.

30kgs is pretty generous these days. That should be no problem, especially for the guys on trail/AM bikes. Are you allowed more than one checked in bag or does it all have to go in the box?

One item of checked luggage. So make it go in the box. I get a shop to pack my bike. (In a 29er box. heads up there) They do a much better job than I ever could. It should cost about R150.

I ask them to weigh the packed bike and leave the box open. I then fill the box with my afformentioned goodies and tape it closed. I also reinforce the corners with tape. I go through a roll of tape to do this.

I also write my name, address and phone number on the box
