I have been running tubbies on mine...

A tufo XC4 on the front and an XC2 on the rear. I run alu rims, so I can bottom them with no fuss. The pressures are super low, 1.4 f and 1.5 r. Tyres roll well, dont pinch flat or snake bike, so really enjoy them.

I'm thinking of geting the Surly steel fork. Have you guys got any opinions on it?

havent had the pleasure of riding a surley fork but I love my Steel Gt fork. cant imagine there will be that much difference.

What does one do, build it rather?

it is a lot more personal and fun that way, you'd miss out a big part of the experience. But the first rule of SS is there are no rules.

Sweet. Soon I might have to choose between carbon and steel and I'm not sure what to go for.

@doppeldanger Not as bad as I expected, my DS is very soft especially over rocks etc but with the rigid and bigger wheels are a bit of a harder ride but not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. I've added 2.4 tyres and 700mm carbon bars to ease the ride which made a huge difference. The bike is also much lighter and climbs like a "bergbok" :)

I can vouch for the Pro Carbon fork and the X-Lite. I prefer the Pro - it has a leetle compliance - the X-Lite is woes!

Also have a Niner Carbon and Niner Steel fork waiting to be built and tested - watch this space.

Tyres? Conti X-King 2.4 gets my vote!

Thought so...Have been riding a 26 HT geared 100mm travel for about 4 years now and have been thinking of getting a 29er(especially for the type of offroad riding available here in Bloem) and converting the 26er to SS. Thought the Silverback rigid SS in the classifieds was a good deal and a good starting point though.

Doing my 4th Trans this year and was toying with the idea of tackling it on the 29er...

But I get what you are saying about the 'personal' experience.

Is a piece of art when hanging on the wall....

I need to figure out how the get the work stand/ clamp out of the pic... that would make a really awesome image - just the bike 'floating' against the wall.
