First time tackling this...

Looked at the previous years times and it seems really fast?

I see the first few pros go sub 3 for 80km?

Any tips? Need to knows? Advise?

Is it quite technical?

Thanks!

First big climb is tar, then undulating forestry roads, bit of single track, but worth doing at least once.

Tar?? Simola?

The profile looks like you hook a big climb, go down again and then hook a monster?

The times don't lie... Fairly easy and fast for a marathon. I like the idea that most of the big climbs are early in the race when your still fresh & strong. Then after 20km you can go more or less go balls to the wall because most of the serious climbs are over. Other thing about the climbs at the start is that the field is spread out nicely by the time you hit the downhills and bits of singletrack.

Not really technical, like most mass mtb events, but there are a few nice and fast single track sections (more than I anticipated, but you wouldnt want to enter just for the singletrack)

Only sucky part for me is the 80km merging with some of the shorter routes about 20km(?) before the end, so suddenly you go from riding your own pace to working your way through 100s of backmarkers, so you have to be patient at the bottlenecks of some of the more "technical" sections.

The times do lie. 80Km is some random word to describe the route to make it count as a marathon. Real distance is quite a bit shorter

feels alot shorter yes

i got 76km last year

Was good, tough (if you hit it), nice and dry bar one or little water puddles. An extra loop added to last year, distance definitely exactly 80km, resulting in an average time add of between 10 and 20mins to last years route. Top 3 guys did sub 3hours, Evans and Reid 1st and second. I don't like Racetec doing the timing this year, coz so many entrants did not have timing chips! Which means results aren't "really" true (lower down). Anyway, it was a fun day out and that's what its about!

I'm not to sure about last year, as I had to pull out due to viral infection, but every other year I did it they did manual timing, 10's of people taking numbers and time as you come in

bull****. Everybody knew you need a chip. Was also available at registration. How else are you gonna time a race where hundreds riding different distances finish together

I for one didn't know I needed my racetec chip, and I defintely wasn't alone. Lots of guys without chips.

I checked the Racetec website the day before the race, and my entry for Knysna was not recorderd, so I assumed they were not timing this race. Bit disappointed as I did a good time, but no use crying over spilt milk.
