I Entered Masters XCO World Champs in August...

Good for you. You will enjoy it.

But you will need to practice. Places to go practice: Fountains, Modderfontein and Thaba Trails. These all have XCO specific tracks and is the perfect practice you need.

There is a Gauteng Provincial Champs race on the 13th July ( venue still TBD but probably Thaba)

Thereafter they will be holding informal racing (practice time) at Thaba on the weekends preceding the Masters WC. This was relayed to us at the start of this past weekends race at Thaba.

The aim is to put in consistent laps all at about the same time. The start is fast so idea is to get away and then hang on. Easier said than done.

If anybody wants to meet to train at any of these venues I suggest we set up an email list and start doing rides together. 1 - there is always somebody quicker than you so good practice to chase. 2 - good comradie. 3 - another excuse to go ride.

My next 2 weekends are full (work calls) but from 2 July I will be out at these venues training.

The Masters XC Course is cool rode it lots on the weekend ... Lots of singletrack! TONS of tight switchbacks ... and only 2 real climbs ... the track as it stands now is about 9km long i think but Nick says he may shorten it a bit to about 7km ... also he said he will be adding in some proper tech stuff soon with A, B and C lines to get you through or around the obstacles.

Look out for some gap jumps and rock gardens!

Been riding a lot of this on our night rides... some awesome sections. There's so much new track being cut at Cascades at the moment that I'm not 100% sure what is on the Masters course (the red arrows seem a fair indication). The 'bowl' section is awesome - dropping in from high on the berm to the bottom with a sneaky rock garden at the bottom of the third (or so) bowl...

Make sure you can race flat out for at least 1h45min, train to start hard and fast. Then make sure you warm up good before the start.

It will help to go and ride the track like 5 laps and start going faster with every lap, and try and memorize the circuit and study technical sections to get the best lines. If possible watch past events from that circuit and look at wich lines works best.

Good luck and go for Gold.

Looking at the 45 - 49 age group entries so far, lots of talent from SA there but the overseas entries looking a bit sparse. Would be nice to see some top age groupers from EU taking part to compare to the local talent

As you can imagine 50 odd riders on around a 5/6 km lap they have to pull riders off to be fair to the front guys.thats the rule.If they want to get rude(was done at African Continental champs)they can pull you off if you more than 80% of a lap behind leading guys.

I have entered!! 30-34

I think it is a great opportunity. The world champs are on our door step (just a local flight away) and we can race it. I think it will be great fun, really painful and an awesome experience.
