Rabid ones. With fleas.

Cool! Pretty much what I have now…the pups eat an ottoman this morning.

Back on topic…I reckon I would be happy to donate monthly to this, then perhaps donate more in the months in which I really like the cause.

this is a good idea Tumbleweed, but as a suggestion.....I think having a central bank account, which is disbursed to different good causes can get complicated and technical. maybe Admin can set up a separate section for Hubbers to post appeals for funding focused on getting cyclist overseas. donations can then be made direct into the recipients bank account similar to wannabe's appeal.

Then it's clean, and no one can bitch an complain when a donation is made which a contributor doesn't agree with.

TheHub is full of good people, but it can also be a nasty badass place, when things go south.

That is a better idea.

I was going to go the central bank a/c route but it's much easier to find a good cause and donate directly.

Once a month we pick a cause from names/organisations put forward by hubbers and donate directly.

Your thoughts?

Couldn't there be a combination of the two? People who maybe trust the hub to decide on a good cause can set up debit orders or repeat EFTs to the hub fund and their money would go to every monthly choice, and then those those who want to pick and choose can donate directly?

Yup. Nothing stopping "ad hoc" donations to a chosen central fund.

I'm happy to set up the account and give monthly feedback on amounts, donations, etc. The advantage of a bank account is monthly debit orders - makes the fund more predictable and official...

I'm open to all ideas. My team mate and I raised a bunch of money for charity a few years ago through corporates and the experience was really rewarding. Hence this idea.

We need critical mass though - c'mon hubber.

After seeing all the donations come in for Maroesjka including some from myself along with giving an airticket to a rider to go to World Mountain Bike Marathon Champs next week. Please consider the junior been selected to go to World track champs all have to come up with I been told R30 000 to go! This is the link to who has been selected:

I think it's an awesome idea!

After helping Maroesjka and seeing Wayne's generosity I had a moment of "we can make a difference"....

So let's start a Hubfund.

How it works:

Each Hubber donates a few hundred Ronts every month into a combined fund/bank account/dirty envelope.

We accumulate until we have a sizable ammount then we collect names or institutions and have a public vote. The winner gets the lot or portion there of.

I'll report the weekly/monthly tally here on thehub to keep everyone informed.

To kick off I'll donate R500/month from my CITEC Agency.

We'll fine tunr the rules and regs as we go along - right now morals and ethics will be the guide...

Who's in?

Slowbee - please can you sticky this.

Matt - any objections to this?

Whose we paleface..... (line from a famous Cowboy and Indian movie or joke)

In theory its a good idea, but i'm concerned that it would turn into a serious bun fight when WE get around to deciding who receives said funds?

There are valid concerns here. We are still at the phase of thrashing them out. Let's look at how this can/could be done, rather than saying or asking why it can't.

My 2c.

A few years ago i used to donate a lot of money via Organisations.

For reasons i wont mention here, it became apparent that a lot of these (not all) organisations have so much admin costs and red tape that quite a large portion of the funds never reached the end benefactor.

I made a decision to only donate to causes where i could be sure most, if not all, of my money went to the person/cause that i wanted it to go.

I am a big fan of helping others, but i request that if we go this route of a hub fund, that we keep it as simple as possible to ensure that the money reaches the right people.

Perhaps a monthly cause and poll is the way to go, after all, if it is not a cause you agree with, you can sit that month out and donate to the ones you want to.

another suggestion is to possibly have a forum section dedicated to causes, a thread per cause created by either the person in need or a friend etc, and we decide which ones we wish to donate towards?

Either way, i think regardless of the format, this is a great initiative. Well Done Eldron and Slow.

Mmmm difficult one. I would be happy to donate but more of an adhoc basis...i.e. As and when I have spare cash available. The problem does come in when deciding what disciplines to support. road vs track vs MTB vs DH.. I guess the majority decides? Do you get prior to submit proposals...or is it word of mouth stuff

And finally...with chit chat threads not appearing on the listing of active topics on the left..no one will ever know about this

So true. I am involved in an NPO and I cringe when the members use friends companies who aren't the best/cheapest etc. It's all about kickbacks.

We do loads of good but people make decisions on their own to benefit themselves.
