Yea good point but I think it will give you the same as the edge 500...breadcrumbs, not turn by turn which is ideally what you want I suspect

Hey then I can use my old Foretrex 200 - it was good enough for Enduro Africa and the battery lasts about a month :-)

Yea, with the 500 you just download the gpx file as a course and it gives you breadcrumbs...maybe pm edgar, he just finished the d2c and has had first hand experience. Think he used a 800

hahahahha if yours is marked its ok, I never forgot where mine was, the biggest problem was security, things were stolen at hazeldean, sure wappo, glen and garry will sort that out next year.

i had a muk n druk camera, a garmin and a cell phone that i chrged most days. i put all of then in an old darc's glsasses case connected to a multi usb adaptor, which then had the plug on the outside.

agreed, after the issues this year with items being stolen, the guys will make a plan for next year (just not the old tannie and her container that was at mackenzie this year - it took longer to stand in that que than the que for food)

Ja the best race village imo was frankfort....jis those people were organized...bags in tent when you arrive(bonus, I know its not a given, still lekker), bike washed by laaities...spotless, charging station was very efficient...4-5 people checking things in and out...no chance of it being stolen and of course those karan steak...njom njom njom.

karan steaks - nothing wrong with those

partner & i did our entry this morning.

he crashed out at the start of day 4, so we are going back to sort out the "unfinished business"

You could also get the Garmin eTrex 10 (no maps) or 20 (with maps),

and get the handle bar mount. These are hiking Garmins, so there are no cycling features,

but they are brilliant for navigating, and they take AA batteries, so you just swap them out.

I use the eTrex 10 in conjunction with my Edge 500 if I need to navigate.

The Edge 500 is great, but it is a useless navigator.

Use the Edge 8x0. Get the SA topo sheets and you can see the topography, too.

The 8x0 will last 2-3 days depending on how long you ride. I have a solar charger and you can also use the charging stations provided.

"Hijack"

Solar charger for the Garmin? Where would I be able to get a charger only without the other goodies which come in the pack?

"Hijack off" - just had to try and find out.

That's what I suspected. How's the battery life though - heard its not that good?

Used a mates 800 for Dusi2c and didn't need to charge it for the 2 days.......

Talking go the guys who did dusi2c including the top finishing teams 80% said they were happy using a gps the only drawback was at the turnings off bigger roads onto tracks etc..you need to slow up if they are not marked because most overshot them and had to do a Uturn until they learnt to pick up the turns. Most said a simply lime arrow on the road or track would have been a great help.

So it seems the 800 or 810 are the way to go?

Pity, i have a Forerunner 910XT that is less than 6 months old, now i cant use it for J2C.

ya but you can't swim laps with the 810...

I have an Oregon 300 which was for sale in classifieds before the crash. Bike mount, topo 2011 maps ( I think ) and a boat and windscreen sucker mount. Perfect for this kind of use. Pukka gps, heart rate belt compatible and uses 2 x AA batteries. R1800.00 if anyone wants.
