Why you say that dips?,

Wither one likes their business model or not, the fact is they are an extremely successful operation and no one can take that away from them.

It's sad I know lots of LBS pulling strain offering much better service and back up, and cajees as you said biggest stock levels, more branches, yes it's a working model, you would be a idiot if you don't see it as a " winning" model. I suppose it's the same in all industries MONEY WINS

I understand that Grumps. With increasing success comes increasing levels of trust, which in this case appears to be misplaced at best or misguided at worst. "Reputational integrity", or lack of it, if you will. The communities they service trusted and supported them whilst they were growing their footprint. They now opportunistically exploit that trust, and therefore don't deserve it. I agree with Dips, their behaviour is sad.

I have to disagree.

Let's take a look at our cellular providers. They're some of the largest companies but have almost no one's trust.

Let's think of insurance and medical aid companies. Also massive. Also extremely dodgy and mistrusted by most.

Now yes, they are a grudge purchase. But that doesn't change the fact that being big does not always mean better service and/or expertise and/or trustworthiness.

Now we all know the type of people who own cajees. They deal in their business the same way most of their brethren do. This is well known and expected.

If you neglect to check the value of a product or are too embarrassed to haggle, then you should not buy anything there. Or the Plaza. Or a little Shop in fordsburg.

The fact is, most cycle shops take the piss with pricing. It's ridiculous! You have to know a products value before you buy at ANY cycle shop. Being helped by a clueless white teenager and being overcharged is just as annoying as any other type of salesperson. what REALLY annoys me is, I must first "build a relationship" (read spend a lot of money on multiple occasions) to be able to negotiate with my LBS. At least the first time you walk in the guys at cajees will negotiate.

So, finally - if you want to shop there, don't. If you do, go for it. They're not the only retailer ripping people off and they won't be the last. It is up to the consumer to arm themselves with as much information as possible before parting with money. Anywhere..

Just don't be stupid. It's not that hard.

And if they're ripping off the "innocent" buyer, then clearly the innocent buyer has little concern for the money they spend there. If I was about to drop around 5-8k on a bike an accessories, I would do research and come back if it was reasonable.

I don't walk into a hifi Corp and pay for the first thing offered. I shop around. Same as bike shops. But that's cause I can't afford to waste money, or be negligible with my expenditures.

If you can afford not to do the research, then you clearly aren't concerned about being ripped off.

Afd I agree, spending your money wisely lies in your own hand, Cajees's have never done me in, research your product and they are much cheaper that the fancy hoi poloi boutique shops.

Ya I'm really struggling to understand everyone's annoyance. Like the guy who bought the ancient trek for like 12k. Surely you whip your phone out and Google the bike quick? The OP checked the price of esi, and didn't buy them at the unreasonable cost. Good on you Bro, you had knowledge and used it.

The same things happen at almost every mechanic and panelbeater. If you haven't bothered to learn, retailers are not going to be kind and teach you. It's called school FEES for a reason. I've paid mine a few times. It happens. Man up.

Cellular networks, insurance companies, medicals aids. The knowledgeable amongst us choose the best of a bad bunch. The same applies to cycle stores, the most experienced walk away with the best deal whilst the ignorant and naive (including the noob youngsters those very stores should be encouraging) get ripped off and laughed at as soon as they exit the front door. It's an expensive lesson for them, and not the way to grow a brand or encourage loyalty.

There's "stupid" and there's exploitative. The latter always wins over the former. SAD.

(Faux) Morals like "I will not even drive past" or "feeling crap just walking in" are also theatrical bullshyte.

Dude let's face it. We've witnessed here that loyalty is cheap. How many of the posters gave us prime examples wih something along the lines of "I have my LBS who I go to regularly but Cajees price on a new bike is just too good". Seems they're loyal when it suits them. This is business, not a playpen. You get what you can when you can from who you can. It's the reality we live with and you either live in the fifties and get shafted or you evolve with the world and play the game and score.

Morals and values and loyalty are lovely words that fly out the Window when money is involved.

I don't disagree, survival of the fittest. There should be a rule against ripping off youngsters though.

Everyone else is fair game. If you're dumb enough to get caught ripped off, you're old enough to pay the price.

Fair enough, I hear what you say.

Youngsters aren't the ones who are being ripped off though. It's the yuppy husband and wife who want to join the friend couple on those bike rides.

Youngsters don't have the money to have ripped off them.

It sucks, but it's adapt or die. Knowledge is at everyone's fingertips nowadays. Time they started using it man...

Big H, it's not about (faux)morals. I needed a bolt for a child's seat that was missing in the box. Went to Fourways. Didn't have a bolt, so go with 1 of the workshop guys into the workshop to look for 1. Digs an old bolt out of a toolbox that is right size. Owner then wants to charge me R80 for the old used bolt. And this was 8 years ago. When I questioned the cost, he got abusive, started swearing at me. It ended with him telling me to get out of his store.

So I did and vowed to never shop there again, and to tell everyone I know how *** they are. So am still doing that.

So......just morals. Nothing (faux) about them.

Matter of principles reign supreme, a bolt could be bought at Builders Warehouse, except if you neded it in titanium.

In cases like that I turn around and walk away. I do not let pride get the better with me and argue with fools

Why did you throw the bolt away..... Careless of you.

Yah, I do much the same Big H, maybe as you get older you just mellow a bit,...... I dunno, but I seldom argue with anyone anymore, usually I find it easier to just walk away from unpleasant situations.

....but that said, theres no excuse for been rude to a client, even though I think many test the extreme limits of any shop owners patience and moral reserve, theres still no excuse for it.
