Its not motorists fault. Accidents happen all the time. Cyclists need to realise that riding on the road, amongst cars, is dangerous. Probably for similar reasons that we're not allowed cycling on freeways. You've got a same chance of being in an accident when out in your car as you do when out on the bicycle, the only difference is that you will get seriously hurt when on your bicycle.

The vast majority of "accidents" are not truly accidents. They stem from a negligent act on the part of one or other party, usually the driver of the vehicle who "doesn't see" or "didn't know" or "didn't think" something. When they start being held accountable for this then the number or "accidents" will diminish.

The problem is with people's attitude on the roads towards ALL road users using their vehicles as weapons of mass destruction on SA roads, they don't give a flying vark. It's crazy to see how many bumpers, car lights, wind shields, vehicle body parts, broken beer bottles, etc. lies next to the roads and I see plenty new ones often on my commute to work and back on the bicycle. Awsme hit the nail on the head, the law needs to change so that vehicles are always held accountable, but that is like farting against thunder...

anyone is welcome to go and stand at a 4 way stop, count a 100 vehicles passing through it, and let us know how many actually stopped, came to a dead stop, I'll take a guess, will be less than 5.

thats the attitude on the road.

metro, ignore speeding, start at the stops, at the lights, make people realise the rules are to be followed, they are there to protect us. enforce the "little" things and people will start realising there is consequences.

Despite that some of us still ride our road bikes for training on a week day morning. I love riding that bike and I will continue, we try our best to be as safe and as vigilant as possible and it is what it is .....

i think every french citizen has cycled on a public road in their lifetime,so the whole nation is bikewise and very aware of other non car road users .We will never get there and it is up to the cyclist to be vigilent if you want to stay alive .I ride around traffic circles daily and it is clear that most drivers have no plan of how to handel a cyclist around them

Can go on warra-warra-ing about causes, attitudes and whatevers, or go search for some false sense of securities like the 1.5 campaigns. The bottom line is the roads in SA are too damn dangerous and not getting any safer. I gave up road riding long ago, just too damn dangerous.
