Hi there fellow Hubbers,

I am an avid mountain biker but have decided to broaden my horisons and try out the road. It must be said that I am in no way considering a move to the road rather than the trails, I just want to give it a bash. Plan on doing no more than two events in a year, more than likely the 94.7 Cycle Challenge and The Argus - and will most likely hit the road twice a month?

So, my question is, what road bike should I be looking at? I am wanting to spend as little as possible, but also dont want to buy something that is a dog? Budget would be 4k at an absolute maximum.

4k can buy you some seriously nice gear... Theres only one way though: second hand...

Option 1.: Raleigh RC3000 ::: youll get them everywhere and i mean everywhere. it has proven itself to stand the test of time. good weight, easy maintenence! and it actually rides good!

Option 2: Giant defy/ocr... Quite a few around. a second hand defy will make you a happy man!

Option 3: I got a Schwinn fastback... and i love it!!! just not so many around...

go 2nd hand, something with an alloy frame, carbon fork and 105 groupset should be available at that price.

Thats what you need!

haggle for the right bike and make sure you get the right size!

Don't forget to budget the 'extras' that you need for a road bike as well that always comes as a nasty surprise.

Edit: if you really want to get a decent bargain in that price range then wait for the week after the 94.7 or the Argus. Alot of people that bought all the kit for the race and trained 4 times or so can't get rid if the bikes fast enough!

Just remember that with a second hand bike, set aside some cash to get the right size stems, new grip tape on the bars, may need your fit bars too (correct width). They may seem like nonessentials but these few items will make or break whether you're comfortable! Just my 2c

Every time I buy a new bike I aways think I have everything I need... Blatantly not. ;)

Then you go for a bike fit and they tell you everything is wrong and you need to delve even deeper into the credit card... So much fun!
