Step 1: Go to Suikerbosrand

Step 2: Break your rear derraileur cable exactly halfway round.

Step 3: Turn the limit screw in as far as it goes.

Step 4: Ride the remaining 33km in a 53/39x15

Step 5: Feel the burn

How much suffering has such a simple track brought..!?

What I like are the girl / guy pairs riding half prepared, on entry level bikes, with the girl trailing behind with thunderclouds hanging low over her head... 'C'mon honey, lets go ride around SBR - will be fun!' Famous last words and all that :)

And that's how the fight started...

Worst fight i had with my Mrs.

Tandem around kyalami for the first time.

Tandem are not for newly married couples.

My wife agrees with you :-(

That's very clever. The screw thingy I mean. Wish I thought of that last year when I broke the same cable at the beginning of the Shova. Did about 80km in the 11.

When you're an old fart (thanks Sean) you gotta box clever!

Worst is that I wouldnt even be able to keep up with you even if I have a 3x9 -_-

And now for Eldron's next tip:

Carry a spare cable.

Or is that too solft?

Pah. Cables fall into my "stage race only" category. It's easy enough to limp home on a 15 or 14 on a day ride or race.

Plus the head of the cable got well stuck in the STI - no chance of changing it on the road. Tonight is STI deconstruction time....

Did you not try pulling the cable out of the housing, tightening it to get it in a reasonable ration and tieing a knot in the cable to hold the rear derailleur position? rather than adjusting the limit screw?

Not very paint friendly though..

I reckon the 15 was the best ratio - it stung a bit up the hills but stopped me from pedalling out on the flats and downs. Maybe a 16...

The limit screw is far more precise - the knot technique has a bit of variable slack which could mean an over the bars incident if the chain slips on an uphill I reckon!

I feel your pain Darryl.

BUT.... was it really worse than when we raced through SBR back in the day trying to stay in a bunch full of climbers. All I remember is sweating blood as I was fit then but still 20kgs heavier than most.
