I've just changed my tyres and having some trouble getting the one to seal properly. I have a Maxxis Ardent LUST and an Ikon going onto American Classic 29" rims.

So the process was:

- Tyres on

- Stans in

- Bomb the tyre

Worked like a charm for the Ardent but the Ikon is losing air (slowly). What should I do?

- add more Stans then reinflate?

- hope that is seals overtime?

Thanks for the advice...

I would check that the rim tape is correctly fitted and that the tyre is seated properly, check the line around the tyre that it is equidistant all the way around the rim. Pump the tyre to about 4 bar and it should pop then you know it has sealed. Leave the tyre off the bike for a few hours on its side and the sealant should then seal properly.

You shouldn't use bombs, the CO2 (forms weak acid), affects the ammonia (base) that keeps the latex liquid, which can result in booger formation over time, you should rather use a floor pump or compressor, ad Bombs for race emergencies.

have you done the whole shake the wheel and spin it thing? and are you sure its not leaking at either the valve or through one of the spoke holes? a bath of water should allow you to check the above.

Just be careful when pumping the tire to very high pressures over recommended values, once the tire pops of the rim, it tends to do it more easily in future, or at least that was the case when I did it by mistake a year back, it also leaves your ears ringing and a face full of latex that burns if it goes in your eyes

Aahh the wonders of getting a tubeless tyre to seal properly the first time! I agree with the above. In addition, check the valve allignment, valve core and for leaks in general as explained. Spin it and let it lie on both sides fo ra couple of hours. Also, I've found that going for a ride helps - don't know if its has to do with the seating of the tyre or the distrinution of the sealant....

Thanks for all the responses! Interesting re: the bombs... didn't know that. Won't be using them in future...

I've spun the tyre, wiggled it, shaken it, etc a few times. I'll see if I can isolate the leak.

Once I've found the leak do I hope that the Stans will seal it or should I remove the tyre and try and get it reseat on the rim?

I've overinflated a tyre above recommended pressure and ended up with a garage covered in Stans, stay within the limit.

I find it takes a tyre 24 hours to settle properly, sometimes longer. i lie it down and flip over every 4-8 hours. find the leak, work from there.

why not bomb it? i've never had an issue with that.

Read the other comments . It does not go to well with the sealant and this is from experience not because a bloke in a white coat said so . Also after you did your conversion the best is to go out for a long ride .

Ikons may struggle on AM rims, I ride this combo. They are a bit loose.

Did you hear the magic 2 pops when seating the tyre, if not then inflate more, careful..

Rimtape or valve may be leaking, which means you need to do it over.

Thanks - i did use soapy water and did hear a pop so maybe it just needs some time to seal.

Going to try lying it on its side and then flipping it over.

Cheers!
