Which side is your rear brakes?

Mine is then the "wrong" way round. Right front and left rear I however asked for it this way as I come from a motorcycle background and that how it is on them.

I recently bought a bike that's the other way round, but I'm going to swop it around.

How is it possible that so many bikes can be built up with the brake levers installed on the incorrect side?

There is two ways I have thought about it, either have the strongest hand on the brake with the most stopping power, i.e. front, or the strongest hand always fully on the bar, i.e. back. But I suppose it depends on more than that, i.e. do you always have both hands on the brakes, or does your setup allows one finger braking, etc. Me, I still have them the way they came, too scared too change them.

Road - right rear left front but I just pull on those as hard as I can with both hands anyway.

There is no right or wrong way until you come short because you've used the wrong brake. When I started riding I almost saw my butt a few times because I kept using the front brake when I wanted the back and vice versa. So I swapped them around. When I got back onto a motorbike I realised why - on the m'bike the back brake is right foot and the front is right hand. Now I simply set my bikes accordingly as that is what is ingrained in my mind (I rode motorbikes most of my life and only started cycling in 2003).

 

If you prefer it the other way then that is what works for you and how you should route your cabling.

It's a new standard. 15% more torsional rigidity. Of course it renders all OLD technology bikes completely useless. Test riders claim a huge leap in performance. Coming to a World Cup Podium soon.

There is no correct answer. It is personal preference. I do use my dominant hand for the front brake as it is more sensitive and does most of the braking.

I knew of someone who rode a road bike with only one arm who had both brakes on the one side too.

Aah this old topic again.

 

I didn read any further than the 3rd reply, so sue me.

 

Do a search it has been discussed a few times before.

 

But yes mostly you'll find:

Left: front

Right: rear

 

That is simply because that is how 99% of the bike comes pre-assembled from the factory and everyone has gotton used to it, even mechanics building bikes from scratch.

 

The manufacturers probably wanted to keep it simple for all the noobs:

 

Right controls everything at the Rear, rear brake and rear gears. Left controls everything at the front, front brake and front gears.

 

Simple is not always logical!

 

Most stopping power comes from the front brake. Crusing speed is controlled with the rear. Lets face it, eveyone uses the rear much more than the front.

 

With the majority of the population right-handed, why oh why would you want to use your dumb hand on the brake that can send you flying over the handlebars??

 

I can feather my front brake much more accurately with my dominant right hand than my dumb left hand. If I suddenly grab a fist full of brakes with my dumb left on the rear, worst is a tailslide. Not so with dumb left controling the front!

 

Also, I can control my crusing speed with my left hand on the rear, leaving my right hand free to shift suddenly when needed.

 

Right = Front, seems more logical to me anyway.
