Thanks for the info, I'd rather not say what I just paid for a Shimano kit.

 

as far as i know you cant use dot 4 for shimano brakes...so you dont have to feel too bad

Correct, you can't use dot 4 for Shimano. Shimano uses mineral oil, Jacquers link and suggestion will work

Be careful about using just any oil in your shimano brakes. Shimano oil is a very light wieght (5wt I think) so putting a 40 wt motor oil in will be a bit disastrous.

DOT Fluid is not oil and oil is not DOT fluid.

 

Don't get the two confused. The OP said oil. Further, we know he's talking oil 'cause he was complaining about the price. DOT fluid is dirt cheap - about R20 for 500ml. Mineral oil is ten times that.
