Aaarrrggh I love this race (done about 8 or 9 now) but its now been moved to DC weekend! There are loads of MTB'ers who do DC.......

Oh dear sob sob

Great! For once its not on Pioneer weekend. With all the dirt roadies at the DC we can get our groove on!

Exactly my thoughts. Awesome singletrack and not too many "roadies" doing it.

I've missed this the last few years for various reasons (none of them being that I didn't want to be there). So excited to do it again. Now I just need some lights so I can do the night ride

Oh my Im so damn fat and unfit. I might have to do the short one. But I see. One month to train. The short one its "less technical" ?Eselfontein, non technical? ? really..thats why we come!

Theres a new route now, so you climb more upfront and dont repeat so much on the south eastern flat part.. It was a bit of a surprise last year. And I lost my sence of humor half way up dead man walking. I was the dead man walking. I was moaning the whole way. haha.

I remember how hot it can get at Eselfontein..now its in Nov ?..oh dear.

One last thought.. THis event would do great as a ENDURO but on the MTb.. not the MX bikes.

Hi All

Never did this event before, very curious though!... so if i did the event i would be doing it "blind". Please could you answer my questions below and help me make up my mind.

Although the profile looks like a climb from start 0.0km all the way to roughly the 36.7km mark, i've read about some good single tracks at eselfontein.

  • Are these single tracks mostly ascending trails or descending?
  • would you say the entire route is like... 50% climbing and the 50% descent
  • are the descents on trails or mostly jeep track

i liked the comment above about this event could be ENDURO, please elaborate...

Dirtopia hosts an ENDURO event on the 24th Nov 2013 which i was planning to do, also never did this before... but i love singletrack and not lazy to climb so...

Taahir, singletrack wise Esselfontein must be in the top 3 of the Western Cape, that is if you like rocky technical st! Not that much climbing, but rewarding downhill st after each climb, you'll love every moment!

Most of the track is single track I would say more than 80%. There are some nasty climbs but after every climb there is some breath taking single track. For example after the dead man walking climb there is about a 7 km downhill single track.

The long route is technical but all can be ridden. I would not say its way more technical than say the Wine to Whales. We had to make the shorter route less technical as a lot of wifes (or some of the husbands) and kids wanted to come ride but were scared of the route.

PS. ask anyone who has done it and they all say its in the top three mtb races in the cape, come and ride you won't be sorry.
