No not yet. was chatting to one of my cycling mates a couple of days ago about wanting to go check it out.

i'm looking for options of places I can go even when there's no one available to go with me, so instead of just not doing any riding.

Rietvlei Uni friendly? - i.e. gentle inclines - nice scenery - safe to ride on my own?

nice ride and you can go on your own or take the fam for a picknic

also try modderfontein

Yeah Kings is a fun ride. Just need to make sure you have your climbing legs on and you are confident on steep rocky descents otherwise you will do a lot of resting and walking. There are one or two technical climbs that most guys can't get up.

i've done modderfontein (haven't progressed past green yet) - but it's a lonely place when you go there on your own.

Yes The Vlei is a much better idea than Kingskloof alone. It is probably one of the safest venues around.

At Thaba! Seriously tho, I wouldnt do kingskloof alone-its very secluded and not a whole lot of flat sections-Rietvlei is great for what you're after

yes, start with the green route at rietvlei

I rode Kings on Saturday - did the black (longest and most technical) route. 22.5km / 650m ascent.

It's an awesome and beautiful place to ride but don't go alone. If you crash and cant ride out it may be a while before someone finds you. I would say that there's no security issues though.

Take your climbing legs and make sure you run tubeless tyres with nice strong sidewalls.

Yeah. Just stick to the green route. The blue there is quite technically challenging... :D

The best thing about Rietvlei is that is has lots of different interesting sections twisty though the trees - fairly flat - that anyone can ride. Just about all singletrack. It is short with lots of options and you are never more than a few kms from the car park.

The worst thing about it is that if you don't ride it often it can be a bit disorientating not know where the hell you are. But easy to find your way if you stick to the trails.

Definately not Kingskloof alone, purely from falling and getting hurt with no help point of view (i know it has been said in the thread before me, bu i will repeat to make a point.)

if you are in the general area, try Avianto Trails as well, lots of variation, easy sections, and more challenging sections available.

Open during the week, and very secure.

Kings Kloof has great riding. I normally ride alone, but try to minimise the risks. Had to walk out once. How is Avianto? Did the 12 hr there a few years ago, trails weren't great.

I like avianto purely because its close to home so I can ride there, do a loop or two and go home....the start at avianto is a bit weird where you go up and down, up and down, up and down....but after that its quite cool I think. Some of the sections are tech quite tough.
