Hi Hubbers,

I am building up a CAAD10 and need some BB30 advice.

The frame I purchased had bearings installed but the left side feels rough, a bit of googling and im worried about this new "standard" as they dont seem to be all that durable.

The questions:

1) Does this sound like a clear replacement issue?

2) Which brand has the best quality/price?

3) Who knows a good shop/mechanic for installation in Cape Town?

Not sure if it makes a difference but I picked up a FSA gossamer 50/34 BB30 crank for my Caad10.

Thanks

Also on the BB30 case with a Flash build :o

You can get the bearings separately I believe but generally they are bought as a kit, although I am struggling to find a local source (most on line retailers are out of stock and LBS's pull faces at me when I ask for a BB30 kit)

There are several tools you can use to extract the bearings and to press them in - might be worth taking the frame to someone who has the tools if you are not adept at improvising.

The bearings also have to be preloaded, the method varies with the cranks.

The ceramic BB30 bearings that came with my flash ultimate went all bad within three weeks of riding, 2nd set = same problem.

Sram replacement (steel) seems to work the best. Try Chris King - they should be relatively reliable (but expensive)

Get used to regular replacement - BB30 has lots of advantages, reliability is just not one of them.

Dealing with Cannondale has been hazzle free at least!

If you have a frame with the circlip in the bb shell, Then remove the bearing and take to bearing man.

There is a bearing place on voortrekker road just after the pick n pay. They usually stock a wide variety of bearings for cheap. In fact I even got Endura bearings from them without asking. They didnt even make a fuss about it being endura.

A pic of the bb shell with bearing inside will make it easier to give the correct advice.

1) My opinion on noisy bearings - either clean up and grease or replace. Simple.

2) I ride with SRAM - steel bearings and they last quite well in my opinion.

On durability - my Spez Stumpjumper HT has done in the region of 11000km on the previous BB30, so no worries there as you ride a road bike and the terrain is a lot cleaner...

Anyone got a price from a bearing manufacturer as Bearingman quoted me R184 per bearing excl vat,not exactly a bargain....?

Bearing Numbers are 6806-2RS

Sorry called bearing man back to double check...lady gave me the wrong size originally, they are R95 each, so it is a bargain :)

I agree. I'm astonished at how short-lived BB30 bearings are. They're even worse than GXP, and that says a lot.

I'm now using serviceable BB-30 bearings. They have springclips holding in removable seals. I'm yet to get feedback on their life but I'm hoping for the best.
