So put an insurance claim in for my wheels.

First, they said the quote for a replacement was too high, so rejected claim. Phoned and they said just get a new quote and it should be fine.

Before anything else was sent to them, I was told they want the wheels for salvage so I must courier them overnight.

From johannesburg to durban.

As far as I've heard, most of the companies send a courier to fetch salvage goods.

This is a cost I just don't have the money for right now. Surely I shouldn't have to pay? Nowhere on my policy materials does it mention this will be required in the event if a claim...

Thoughts?

It's not your responsibility to put those costs. If the insurance wants those wheels for salvage, then they must pay for them.

None of the insurance companies say that you must pay in the policy

Agreed. In past experience they paid for courier costs.

As expected. They've just come back with a mail stating they know of no other companies that cover the costs but I must take them to a post net and they'll pay for it.

Thanks for the confirmation guys!

who is these interesting people? I've got the tendency to cut companies off if they give me just a little bit of grieve, sound like people I should steer clear of.

I'll be waiting for the whole thing to be finalised.

Will name and shame should anything untoward happen.

My insurance company collected my rear wheel (front one was stolen). About 3 months later they phoned me to say it was cluttering their offices and they didn't know what to do with it. If I wanted it back I could come and collect it.

a bit of a hijack but what happens to all the bikes/components that the insurance company salvage?

FP, in times gone by you could visit insurance companies and view the salvage then make an offer on goods. I once bought a pair of Campag Bora's for next to nothing. You will be amazed what people get away with in terms of claims. Dont know how it works these days.
