Think it has. Pretty sure I've watched a national XCE here at Cascades. Maybe it wasn't - but there's definately been MTB festivals at Cascades that have included XCE.

actually, I think you are right...and didnt karkloof have an eliminator series this year or last year?

and for those wanting to see what it is about - watch the xce from this weekend

What is the difference between XCO and MTB?

I know XCO is cross Country, does this mean the race is easy?

Please comment.

Problem: Race is easy.

Solution: Ride faster, it is never easy you just go quicker!

Thanks for all your feedback.

Are you swissvan's father?

I've seen slopestyle described as mountain biking as well - not for the faint-hearted! but awesome spectator sport.

XCO

Cross Country Olympic distance.

You need good skill ,you need to be fast through technical stuff and have the ability to go full tilt from the gun.

MTB is what you use to do XCO.

This is how I understand it ...

MTB = Mountain biking -- the sport -- all the following fall under MTB

XCM = Cross country marathon (mostly what we do in SA)

XCO = Cross country Olympic (olympic discipline of lap racing -- like what was in PMB and Nino Schurter won).

XCE = Cross country eliminator (short laps of elimination racing -- like what was in PMB and some Aussie giant won)

DHI = Downhill (very fast and raced by men and women with big balls -- like what was in PMB and Greg Minnaar won -- and Nigel Hicks too

4X = Four cross: Downhill version of elimination type racing

There are a variety of sub-diciplines within the sport of mountainbiking. The mountainbike discipline according to the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale or World Cycling Body) is divided into 3 groups:

  1. Cross Country: XC
  2. Downhill: DH
  3. Four Cross: 4X

Downhill and Four Cross are also referred to as "gravity" events.

Cross country consists of 8 race formats:

  1. Cross country olympic : XCO (also the Olympic format - the high school mountainbike series lap-racing falls into this category)
  2. Cross country marathon : XCM (generally a single lap event over a longer distance compared to XCO)
  3. Cross country point-to-point : XCP (the only difference between XCM and XCP is that XCM starts and ends in the same place where XCP has a different finish point to start point)
  4. Cross country short circuit : XCC (a very short lap race format)
  5. Cross country eliminator : XCE (new format)
  6. Cross country time trail : XCT (mountainbiking against the clock as opposed to riding against other riders)
  7. Cross country team relay : XCR (24-hours mountainbike team events fall under this category)
  8. Cross country stage race : XCS (the ABSA Cape-Epic event in the Western Cape, South Africa, is a well known mountainbike stage race)

Downhill consits of 2 formats:

  1. Individual downhill : DHI
  2. Massed-start downhill : DHM - also known as "avalance downhill"

Four cross consists of 4 riders racing down a track and the first rider to cross the finish line wins.
