From the off the Pyga is definitely more trail focused. The way I have the Vipa build and set up it is more than trail capable and have a bit of fun dialled in, but not to the point where I would say it's a trail 29er. 80mm is still only 80mm.

Vipa Pros

  • It is a lighter by a fair margin (almost 1kg in the frame!) which helps when doing longer rides and tougher climbs.
  • Stealth Dropper Post routing
  • More capable than it's 80mm would suggest
  • I remember the Pyga to be a little slower on turn in than the Vipa. Could be HA or the aid of the 51mm off set fork I have on the Vipa. But then again I have a longer fork on the Vipa than was intended so has be down to overall handling of the bike.

One10 Pros

  • Slacker HA makes for a more confidence inspiring bike on the downs
  • Solid frame will last longer if you're riding aggressive trails weekend after weekend and do lots of drops and jumps
  • Extra weight bossts confidence in heavy, bigger terrain

Really enjoyed the Pyga when I rode it. If you're planning on heavier trails it would be the wiser choice. Maybe also if it's your only bike and, again, you're planning some big riding.

For me the Vipa makes more sense cause I have a HDR as well which means there's less of an overlap between the two bikes, but I still have a 29er that is every bit as fun when riding single track.

Aren't you the proud owner of a HD?

No such luck. Been thinking of Pygaring myself up, but then saw the Vipa on SS and thought 'hmmm'.

I think your comment that a Pyga is a better one-bike solution is probably 100% - and being a married man with one wife, three kids, four dogs, three rabbits and nine chickens, one-bike is where I'm at.

If you can get yourself to Cape Town you are more than welcome to give it a go. I'll drop you off afterwards at the nearest, convenient Momsen dealer...

Will definately take you up on it unfortunately by the time I will be able to get there you may have sold it off already for the next project.

Awesome bike, they have a frame in my size at me LBS and it pains me to know I just can't afford it.

For those wondering about the Vipa's 80mm here's a pic of Chris Birch riding with some mates

"I went for a fun ride on the #VIPA this afternoon with my mates in their free-ride bikes. 80mm of @momsenbikes travel was enough to keep up. I'm really loving this bike."

You need to reconsider your chicken / bike ratio! Keep in mind that that piece of advise is based on "planning to do some big riding". And often.

Both great bikes, though. Don't we all just love riding for the heck of it anyway?

I say you all have TO MUCH BLOODY MONEY!!

(Sorry my mother always said jealousy makes me nasty)

It has only taken me 11 years of building, selling, smokelling to get my rides to a level where they are "average"
