Narrow Wide Chainring Question

missionS

Recommended Posts

Ok so I just bit the bullet and ordered me a 36T RaceFace Narrow Wide thingy.

I'll be running it 1x9 on my latest MonsterCross build. Old XTR 9spd derailleur without a cam or shadow+. When it's on and fitted I'll send some feedback on chain dropping... Steel frame and rigid fork.

If it works on that set up I reckon it's game on for pretty much any build.

Awesome! I'm keen to know how it works on 9sp hard tails without clutches.

I have a spare 34T NW lying around and it may just end up on my "ugly bike" (cotic soul, with long cage X0 9sp RD), if it proves reliable.

Do it. Anything you do to that thing will make it look better.

I don't want to waste a NW on it, if it isn't relaible on a 9sp long cage.

Besides... it doesn't look that bad... it currently has a blue e*13 ring and an orange chain guide.

Just realized these Raceface rings and probably any NW ring you can get double the mileage off them because you can reverse them when the one direction gets worn.

With 2x or 3x you can only reverse the granny ring as the other rings have shifting ramps on the one side only.

The guys changing from 3x to 1x can probably use the short chainring bolts from the granny gear with the nuts on the big ring bolts to avoid needing new chainring bolts.

Can you guys find any narrow chainring bolts on buycycle? Damned if I can....

Does the ring come with tabs (as shown in the pink bike review)?

Don't really want to be raiding my garage for spacers.

Raceface NW now available online at R495 each...

On the homepage - http://www.evobikes.co.za/

Good price.

Naas it looks like you guys only have a 32t ring on offer (although 34t in blue).

Is that correct?

Will you be getting 36t or 38t rings in?

No 32T and 34T available online. 36T and 38T not available at the moment but we will sell them as soon as available.

I used those infernal XTR chainring bolts that came with my cranks. They're shorter than regular, but longer than SS/Narrow bolts.

I had narrow bolts in the toolbox, but they only had 1-1.5mm bite (because I chose to keep my bashguard on) and I didn't want to risk it.

Those darn XTR bolts (which use torx on both sides  ) were too long and there was play when the ring was positioned with graphics facing outwards. So I flipped the ring to graphics inwards (that way the chainring bolt inner doesn't sit countersunk like it would with the ring flipped the other way) and it worked.

So all in all... a bit of a mission. But if one isn't running silly XTR M970 cranks and a bash guard, the regular narrow bolts will work just fine!

But I want orange anodised ones that are colour coded to my bike!

Track bolts work too.

Maybe a certain orange brand of bicycle (that also akes offroad bikes) will have orange hanger bolts, and a sneaky visit to a certain large retailer for said bikes, with multitool in hand may yeild some reward

Tabs? You man like this ring?

If so, those threaded tabs or bolt holes are only on the 30T ir order to get such a small ring on a 104 BCD. All the bigger sizes are like regular single rings.

Can be run either way (main graphics inside or out). Chainring bolt holes only countersunk on "inside" though.

Inside (with countersunk bolt holes)

Outside (not countersunk)
