I am too scared to pull my 11 year old Fuji Sundance out of the garage. The bike is awesome and in pristine condition and just waiting to be ridden but I have become a serious roadie and by my standards getting super fit and am now worried I may be too fit to start off-road.

Sounds crazy but I am just nervous that I will attack everything too hard and just hurt myself! As it is on the road when I see a climb, I can't help myself but pretend I am on Mont Ventoux and then it is flat out down the other side.

The last thing I want is a broken collar bone just before one of the big road races. What to do?

You dont need to be fit to hurt yourself on a mtb.

If you can't engage your brain at whatever fitness level, then leave the bike in the garage.

Hi Joe Low,

What you say is 100% correct and we do try and be carefull, but unfortunately every now and again we start thinking with the wrong thing and the brain looses out. Another lesson - sit on your nuts and use your brain!!!

Hi Orsum

My father, who has been a roadie of long standing, bought his first mountainbike at the age of 70 as a birthday present for himself. he said that he thought he'd try something new. Also, I think he wanted to ride with his grandsons and they only had mtbs at the time. At their first race together he tried to follow the lads through the single track and very nearly came short, so they told him that I said there is no shame in walking the gnarly bits. (Don't believe the little liers!) He's 75 now and the boys ride road as well with him, but he still use the mtb on the Karoo back roads.

Man up? :whistling: :P

No but in all seriousness, dont let the possibility of a fall hold you back. Ive done some crazy **** and have yet to break anything. stick to the jeep tracks and you will be fine :)

Every now and then my brain writes cheques my body and talent can't honour I'm afraid :cursing:
