Road Bike Tubes

Morning legends,

Bit of a noob question, I'm sure, but I've only been road riding a short time.

Yesterday, I discovered two wonderful things.

1. Riding into wind - great fun.

2. Punctures.

After changing my tube, my Q is this : is there a preference for a particular type of tube, or will any one do?

In other words, do they come in different qualities, and if so, what 'brand' would you guys suggest?

Many thanks,

B.

They do come in different qualities but for most of us, the best priced tubes will do.

Similarly priced tubes are generally of similar quality.

You can of course opt for lighter latex type tubes but the come at a premium.

Probably looking @ R50 vs R150.

The other difference in tubes generally involves the valve lengths and types, like removable cores.

Cool, thanks lads.

And if you get a puncture (a wee hole from a tiny thorn) - do you try patch the hole, or replace the tube?

its not inside its on top.

For me, it's Continental inside and on top.

To a point, tubes are tubes, but there are also cheap and nasties out there.

Rather go for a good mid range type (like Conti).

Replace on the road, repair properly when you get home.

My approach as well. And now I always carry 2 spare tubes (properly tested) and 3 bombs when riding. Learnt from past experience and long walk.

Speaking of learning from experience... If you carry a spare in your back pocket -- keep it in a packet.... chafing is not something that only happens under your chamois....

i am not a weight person prob because i am 100kg and a few grams here or there on a tube would not make a difference.i use conti tubes because they have removable valve cores and i then put stans in them and wrap them with gator skins on the outside.touch wood no punctures for a few years.i do carry an extra tube with and some patches just in case.

Try the self-sealing tubes with sealant instead of normal ones...

they all the same mate, I also patch them, once you punchure swop with new one on the road then fix it at home with normal patch and glue! I wouldn't worry bout tubes just make sure your tyres are TPI120 or more, I use Vittoria rubino pro.. go check bike24 youll get them for around R250 each and they are the best ive ever had (and I had lots of expensives ones). If the tyre is strong the punchers will probably disappear...but glass cuts though everything so keep eyes open!

A point to note, if you do put a new tube in on road and you fill it up with a bomb chances are it will go flat a few days later. Before you ride next time just inflate with a floor pump. Be sure to check inside tyre for thorns or glass before fitting new tube.

I've noticed this also - any idea why this is?
