Anybody out there? (How was it?)

How did my favourite Pass stand up to the storm and the rain? How did the BRAVE ones survive?

Not to sure on all the results but Matthew Beers won the event. This youngster is a beast and only took to mountain biking this year and is a Science to Sport athlete being coached by John. He's been giving many Pro's a hard time at races.

and his got to have the best surname ever?BEERS!!!

Bloody hard 2 days, especially today with the rain. I finished 19th and my son aged 16 11th. Yesterday he finished 9th. Respect. Awesome experience, doing it again next year. Good organization by ecobound. Must say the 1st day was also a hard one with that fast ascent

up swartberg pass and then heartbreak hill at the end....

hey G, are you from EL, then I rode with your son all day today. He is a machine can be better if he learns to descend faster maybe he was just being cautious today but he could've placed better. Well done to you & the youngster.

So there was no signal in the hell or de hoek hence the lack of updates. The rain was a blessing in disguise, would hate to be riding it in the heat. I'm super über happy I made the trip to experience THB & that the event wasn't cancelled. Starting an hour later on day1 was not a bad idea either as the rain eventually stopped. Swartberg Pass is a bastard of a climb with little reward on the descents, that you get on day 2. Climbing those passes & seeing riders on the 1st, 2nd,..............up to 10th level must be disheartening for some. Rained both days but it was fun & as far as I can see no damage to my bike seriously, I'm sorry for all those okes who didn't pitch or just didn't start on day2.

13th Day1 & 8th Day2

Corrected Day 2 position.

Thanks for the update. Nothing worse that sleeping in a wet tent !! This year has been one for the rain, thats for sure.

tent was not wet in fact I heard it rained at 4am this morning yet I slept right through & came out dry. I would however urge organisers to invest in new tents or next time I'll just bring my own.

Being the fine cycling specimen that I am, 100 kg of body weight does not do well with climbing in general. So why on earth would I pick a two-day stage race that has roughly 1800 m of ascent on each day, with most of the climbing being within 40 - 50 km's on each day?

Well, I had a score to settle with the event. The last time I did the event together with my late friend Trix (Tinkerbell), I had to bail after 15 km into day 2 - and it bothered me ever since. Having just completed this year's W2W, and feeling olympic, at last minute I decided to get my revenge and entered the event together with my wife. Well, let's just say I got my revenge and medal, but it wasn't pretty. And that had nothing to do with the fact that we were frozen, soaked and covered in mud from head to toe.

The highlight was the stones which my wife laid down on day 1 and day 2 at that flat(ish) section on top of "Die Hell" for Trix.

A great event and congratulations to Ecobound.

Maybe the Freedom Challenge because I spend so much time on the bike? Did anybody mention that the winners could do everything twice in less than the same time it takes me to complete these events? :whistling:

malcolm, just tell him the guy that kept riding away from Him on the downhills but kept huffing & puffing on the uphills sitting on his wheel. He dropped his asthma pump, I told

Him about immediately but he refuse To turn around for it. He most likely would've lost his 10th place overall to me had he done that :-)

Trained hard for race. Got a slight cold/throat infection the Monday. Decided at the end to go (from Cape Town). Morning of race fully dressed and wet at start, tried to clip right shoe into pedal, no luck. looked down and realised that on my left shoe is my MTB shoe and on the right is my roadbike shoe (both black and look the same).

Words will not describe my emotions.

Ending up exploring the Hell with the 4x4. Still suffering emotionally, will go for it next year.

And that my friend is why I have the same cleats on all my bikes - even if I mix match my shoes I can still ride as long as I don't pick up two left or 2 right
