The other day on wildfly or something like that they were is lesotho hiking along the river, camping at next spot and doing some fishing. how cool would it be to do something similar but with the bicycles. that will be fun.

These pics are awesome, some nice catches, my catches dont match that, just a few average size trout and bass, but nothing like that brown. The pics really tempt me now to go fishing

 must have been a largie oom, they are true test of ability....casting, fly selection, playing the fish and tackle. I don't even think of casting to a largemouth with anything less than 5wt....it will just break alles. San Juan is a good fly especially after rains when the river bottom has been disturbed and midge larvas aka bloodworms are drifting all over. I have found off late that they more inclined to take a san juan in bright yellow or pink chenile vs the traditional red. Don't know why though.

I always do the right thing, turn rocks at the water edge over, identify insects, size, colour etc, wash my hands thoroughly with the river water to take my scent away and then choose my flies accordingly. I have a very nifty book at home that identifies most aquatics you find in streams. It is a DOW publication. I have become a little rusty over time but the book is packed. Also helps when tying flies as all are colour pics. It helps you when blending dubbing. Being colour blind help a lot as I can match the colours very accurately. Years ago I sent an email to Scintilla Lace in America. They sent me a massive parcel of ALL the dubbing material they had at that stage, from little Ziploc packets to samples stuck on cardboard. I still use that dubbing today. We recently bought a Bobble Off machine that "shaves" the bobbles off your jerseys, the best dubbing ever "fo free"!!!!!! I also spin my dubbing using silk or copper wire using a little jig I made myself with a beeswax mix I made myself.

I love making little thingies used for fly-tying myself. I have a dubbing needle made with a piece of copper round bar with the needle made of a bicycle spoke. I have a dubbing spinning weight with the hooks made from bicycle spokes. I have a set of hair stackers made with the doppies of different calibres of bullet casings. I do have a little metal lathe that makes these things easier to make yourself.

Awesome oom....sometimes I enjoy tying as much as fishing...sometimes even more so.

Love the jersey shaver for dubbing thing, I have used some of my spaniel's hair(take her brush and remove all the silky hair) and wait for it, caught lots of fish with my own hotspot nymph variation(yellow cdc hotspot, spaniel dubbing and paintbrush tail)...its a killer little fly on the point.

Yup, the hair from my own Brindle Boerboel was awesome. He is old now and lives in Wellinton in the Cape Colony with my son, but if he sees me with scissors he runs!!!!! Roadkill also makes for interesting feathers. I have korhaan, troupant and many other in my collection. Rooijakkals, haas en bakoor jakkals werk ook goed. Moet net vars roadkill wees wat ek met stoom ontsmet.

Sounds like we could be related.

I've got some chocolate and yellow Labrador undercoat dubbing as well as some red and tortoise shell cat fur dubbing that works beautifully (and was donated free and without harming any of our pets) I don't pass roadkill feather or fur without checking if there is something useful. This way I have squirrel, Roller, owl, koraan and many other odd bits. Occasionally I build something from that into a fly just for fun. Got into trouble with the boss once for mixing some squirrel and synthetic glitter dubbing in her mixer/mincer/shredder. :D

hahaha and here is me thinking I am the only one using pet hair.

My other favourite thing to try and do is tie a fly with only one material....yes you are only allowed one thing except of course your hook, cement and thread(which dont count of course)

I make this little dry using a single cdc feather that imitates and spinner...caught plenty of yellows on the dry with it, but they are good for one fish, then they are stukkend.

You guys will like this one....... Strike indicators are always problematic. THIS ONE IS THE ANSWER........ I made my own by stealing a thick yarning needle out of EM's toolbox. Doctored it with the Dremel and used some Scooby Doo tubing. Worx like a dream!!!!!

Baie cool oom H, you use strike indicators quite a bit with yellows, I have given up with the normal ones, so just tie in a foam hopper, but adjusting depth can become quite a bit of admin on the water...at least I get a knock or two sometimes on the hopper and its normally a bigger than normal fish so I can live with it.

Think I told you this. I had a yellow strike indicator on with a klinkhammer on the front. They slammed the yellow strike indicator and left the white klinkhammer. I went home and returned the next day hammering the yellows with the yellow Klink. A day steeped in history....... that was the day I struggled a lot on a very rocky bottom in a fast flowing stream. That was also the day I decided to start cycling to make my legs stronger!!!!!!!!!!!

Did this for a week around Rhodes, just south of Lesotho.

The greatest little flyfishing club in DA Colony - the Cape Piscatorial Society. I love the Giant Kingfisher logo. You're welcome to come and fish our streams even if you're not a member. And some of the tiny flies I tie and use on the mountain trout streams around Du Toits Kloof.

I will say this again...I WILL ONLY TRAVEL FOR SMALLSTREAM TROOT.

The crown jewel in my outfit is my little custom built 3wt sage vxp combined with a sage 4230 reel and sci anglers gpx floating line....presents like no other. Might be a bit "butch" for cape streams where you guys roll with 1, 2 and even 0 weights I believe.
