I run 38t on a 29er and find it perfect . I run a 36 at the rear

I was riding a 38T with a 11-34T for a week as I had cable tied my FD shifter to the bar while I was awaiting the arrival of the correct matchmakers for my new brakes (only had the one new brake on at the time.)

Although I got by in the flat area that is Pretoria, it definitely is not a go-anywhere gear ratio.

I'm gonna run a 30 on the front and a 11-38 on the rear.

Hey all,

I recently started riding with a 1x10, 34t up front (on a 26er). I went for 2 rides over the week end, the first one was alright, but by the end of the second ride my legs were dead dead dead. So I would like to drop to a smaller chainring. Would a 32t make a noticeable difference, or should I drop to a 30t?

I'm concerned that the top end on a 30t is going to be too slow. Anyone have words of wisdom regarding this? :)

Or should I just HTFU and deal with the 34?

The fork I bought from you is on my SS, which got geared up today due to mountains being ridden this week. I am running a 1x9 with a 36 up front, and 11 to 32 at the back on a 29er. I rode the bike on 56km of corrugated and stony roads today, and it was OK. I am going to *** in the mountains, but it's doable. Your fork worked good.

What I meant to say is that you must just harden up. I've got 20 years on you, should make up for the bike weights ;)

Hahaha, dam man, I don't know how you guys do it. I'm still trying to get to grips with this 34, but im getting there, one day at a time.... Thinking of cheating with one of those 42t sprockets out back. Have to wait for some decent reviews first though :)

Lol. Slowly coming round there I see! Good man. Give it some more time before you do anything rash like sell the bike!

Haha, I'll probably still sell it in the end. Just hanging on to it while I get rid of my trance :)

... but dont worry, I'll try replace it with something awesome :)

Riding a 34 on my SS, will probably keep a 34 if I had to add another 9 gears, my take is if I can cope as it it now ,another 9 gears is a bonus ,for hard racing like Epic or J2C I will opt for a 38.

Madness!...

A couple weeks ago I was struggling my ass off up a super steep little climb with my 2x10, when an old toppie comes flying past me on his SS on one. It was a sad day for me...

hahahaha... but on a 6" AM bike ;)

yo may feel you're spinning out though with a 30T. I feel it with my 34T 11-36T combo. As for climbing. the 34:36 combo allows one to go just about anywhere (think about it, trials bikes use around a 1:1 ratio, so this is even lower than those). And it it'd so steep that the 34:36 cant get you up... chances are your AM geometry is going to flip you over anyway, and it's faster to push.

Having a decent spread of gears isn't cheating. You need to look at what works for you not subscribe to what other people say on an internet forum. Hoesing up heartbreak hill on impossible gearing isn't the most logical thing to do.

Ja the thing is we have these things in the Cape where we ride. They're called mountains. Hehehe.

I've checked out my ratios and looked at the gears I actually use when going down and I think I'll be fine. Remember I'm all about the downs. I'm not looking to podium at the Epic and I HAAATE jeep track.

If I run my top gear (30:11) it is a similar ratio to running my 2nd from top gear (38:13) on my current setup and I hardly ever get down to that 2nd from top gear on the stuff I like to ride. And If i really want to peg it I'll whip out the big bike.
