that's when I used to 'race'.....WP Junior DH series, guys like Thomas Rood and Raoul de Viliers, Raoul had a seriously unfair advantage as he had 50mm rear travel and we were all on HT's.......

Did you see the pic Meurant tweeted of himself in '97 a few days ago? Ha ha! I must find it!

I bet you he looked the same ... I am sure he had that beard in Std 6 already!

1994 Paarl Nationals DH - riding a Giant Yukon hardtail with plastic cantilever brakes, and 1/2 inch of non-existent elastomer travel

and 1996 Ferncliffe Nationals DH - riding a Diamond Back Axis TT hardtail with 1.5 inches of SWEET Marzocchi XC 500 air oil front travel

That last pic shows part of the Grundig banner .... are they still as involved as they were back then in DH racing sponsorship?

That's truly beautiful, so many fantastic bails in one video. And I think the 90's rave really just adds a finishing touch

Goodness me that was excellent!! That guys was klip hard.

I think Grundig went under/got bought out a few years ago, and don't have much of a local presence anymore

Grundig pulled out in 1997

The whole reason for the 1996/1997 sponsorship of the SA series was due to the impending world cup in 1997 in Stellenbosch.

However by 1998 when the UCI were looking for sponsors Grundig were in trouble and pulled out - so Diesel Jeans came on board last minute as the main title sponsor.

That lasted 2 years and then they pulled out too - Grundig have nothing to do with MTB anymore AFAIK

Shotto

in 97 I got into MTB via working at CWC.

The store back then was big into Gary Fisher bikes, so when the WC came around we got V.I.P tickets to the event .... what a day out that was!

Remember this lady riding her heart out.

She was second on the day

18th May 1997 1997 Grundig World Cup #1 Stellenbosch, RSA Elite Cannondale /VOLVO 2nd 18 94% 5:30.37
