Hi Hubbers

On holiday in the Simonstown area and I'm looking for an easy MTB trail as my girlfriend are new to MTB'ing and needs to get acquainted with the sport.

I been reading about the safety issues in the Tokai Forest and thus I'm not sure if is a safe option anymore. I don't have a problem to cycle there alone or with a male fellow rider, but I don't want to expose my girlfriend to a possible situation where she can get struck of her bike and get hurt.

Would appreciate if someone can give me some tips on some "safe" trails in the Tokai area or maybe some other "safe" routes in the Southern suburbs.

Head up with any group from the Arboretum and you'll be good, if no one's there stick to main jeep tracks and you'll be fine.....no incidents there for a long time...same as everywhere these days, use common sense and keep your eyes open, unless you about to hit a drop, then close them and pray!

Upper Tokai might perhaps be a little tough for her unless she is fairly fit. It had some long steep climbs up the jeep track. The single track can be daunting for beginners, but she can walk difficult parts. You don't want to put her off early on.

Lower Tokai is totally flat and good for kiddies but perhaps a bit short and too easy for her. It is also boring as the cycling goes.

I would suggest driving out to Koeberg, even if it is far away and the idea of riding around a nuclear power station is somewhat freaky. It is relatively flat with no big climbs, there are animals to see and the view is great. The routes are well marked and not technical at all. Just don't go if the southeaster is howling. Pack some snacks and drinks and go for a beach picnic halfway through your ride. She'll love it and hopefully want to do it again.

if you don't mind driving out, I am with DJR on Koeberg. Meerendal is also a nice ride.

Also, drive out to Rhodes, and ride table mountain to the cable station

lower tokai is great for kiddies, but selfish, irresponsible dog owners who don't keep their dogs on a leash has chased me away.

Dogs?

Do you mean in the plantation area?

btw, upper Tokai, it is the Baboons that freak me out :w00t:
You would have had a meltdown on Vasbyt around midday today, too many to be able to ride past. First time I have had to divert to the jeeptrack.

+ 1 for Meerendal. Just remember that you want to go very early because it will be hot as hell from 10h00 onwards and again, keep the southeaster in mind..

There are trails among the dams from top of red hill to glencairn. A bit Sandy in summer, and safety not guaranteed. Lots of horses too

I third that.

Took my girlfriend there for her 2nd singletrack ride on Saturday (the first one was in Greyton on pretty much completely flat terrain), she loved it. There's just enough gradient to keep things interesting, and a good mix of jeep and singletrack. If she's worried about too much climbing, you can do the Stairway while she takes a shortcut, worked out well for us!
