Hi hubbers!

I am quite new to the sport of mountain biking and I have done the Nissan Trailseeker 45km half marathons last year. I am doing lots of cross training and riding the spruit in JHB.

My question is what do I need to be doing to ride the Joberg2C? I know that is quite a lofty goal but it looks like an epic ride!

I have also noticed that most of the people in the YouTube videos have full suspension bikes. I am riding a hard tail Vida1 with a SRAM X0 groupset. Would the bike be up to it?

Your bike will be fine and is perfect for that race. I would just convert your tyres to tubeless if not already done so.

As Dips says, spend lots of time in the saddle.

Thanks! I have tubeless converted rims with proper tubeless tires, I would like to get some "real" tubeless rims before an event like this. All my problems I have had with the current setup was due to the rims leaking and not the tires.

Perhaps try a few local mtb marathons (Sabie, Dullstroom, Monster, VG) and a three day event before taking on J2C esp. now they have a daily cut-off.

I haven't done J2C or Epic, but have done a few 3 day events and many a marathon, and those are demanding enough. Some times up to 7+ hours on the saddle, its tough physically and mentally. You really need pace yourself, those are long days in the saddle.

J2C is not as extremely demanding as the Epic I don't think, but a very big step up from Nissan trailseeker half marathons.

Pace yourself it is a long event, if you get caught up in the hype of the start and the first days you will pay for it towards the end.Look after your nutrition do not miss a feed, what you eat today is tomorrow's fuel

Oh dear here we go. You know the drill.

  1. Drop them
  2. Assume the position
  3. Move 'em to the side
  4. Deep breath
  5. Hope nobody can see your tears
  6. Act like nothing is wrong
  7. Zip yourself in tent
  8. Warm up shammy cream
  9. Apply while moaning
  10. Enjoy the stage
  11. Start at 1
  12. Repeat
