I have a small hairline crack at the top of my carbon steerer tube. I do not think it is safe to ride with it as it is. My question is, would it be possible to replace the carbon tube with an aluminium tube? It is not tapered and 1 1/8" and about 30mm too short for me anyway. Would it be safe to do this and also cost effective rather than buying a new fork?

Appreciate some advice? Thanks

Sorry, for a road bike.

I extended a MTB steerer last year by welding and it is still working 100%. (I put a pic on the Hub) Just don't know enough about carbon to take the chance.

I'm sure one of the pros that do carbon frame repairs could sort out the cracks and lengthen it at the same time. The reinforcements may make it heavier though

Was thinking along the same line. Don't know of any carbon pros in the Durban area though. Maybe some help on this forum?

I'm not an expert at anything but I certainly would not take a chance on such a vital component. Pm BogusOne maybe he can give more insight as to what you should do. Alternatively order yourself a fork from Hong-fu sports or Deng-fu. Check them out in Chinese carbon thread. If you are in a rush pm carbon29er as he may habe stock of an unbranded fork.

Call minnaar racing and speak to James. He was telling me about a carbon guy in your parts of the world. Apparently does very good carbon repairs to frames. Maybe he could give you some advise or help you out.

You are a mind of information! Thanks, will give it a go but the number seems incorrect?

I hear you Cippo, looking at the options but replace is the safest way to go I think.........? Will try the options recommended and feel my way around. Thanks.

No worries. Somebody mentioned his name a while ago and I figured it may come in handy some day. Those type of guys don't come around every day and when you need to contact them nobody can help. I haven't used him but I heard he was a carbon repair specialist As for the number, I saw it here

Hope you come right.

Maybe take it down to the engineering shop and ask them to turn an aluminium tube that would fit tightly into the steerer tube on a lathe? Couldn't be that difficult.

I did this a while ago and it works 100%. I inserted an aluminium tube into the full length of the steerer tube and glued it in with fiberglass resin. We even managed to lengthen the tube with the aluminium and an extra piece of carbon from another fork. Although it added some weight it was even stronger than before.

Thanks again Grebel

Have contacted him and said he has done plenty carbon steerer extensions. FYI He will be doing carbon bike repairs full time. His price is certainly cheaper than a replacement. Seems he is the go to man.

Thanks for all the help.
