New Chain & Cassette, now funny noises...

Morning,

Recently replaced my chain(HG-93) and cassette(9 speed) and all goes well on the work stand without any noises. When I go for a test ride all gears are good and quite till I shift to smallest front ring and either one of the 3 bigger rings at the back. Then sounds similar to either misaligned gears mixed with bearings crunching start occurring. I've replaced the bottom bracket bearings, reset gears to perfection, checked chain links, checked front rings for wear, checked cluster lock ring torque, freehub still good. I've swopped my XT wheel with my wife's DT swiss and know my LBS has loaned me a Mavic crossmax wheel and the sound still persists.

ANY idea as to where I can continue my search will be moerse appreciated as I'm about to join the looney club if I don't sort this sound out!!!

If all you have done is replaced cassette and chain (and assuming the bike was 100% beforehand) then maybe its all 'bedding' in so to speak?

did you lube the chain?

my wife had an issue with her road bike, after months of swearing a mate of mine had a look at it and said the chain was put on the wrong way around, changed it and the noises stopped

Check your delimiter screw that widens the gap between DR and cassette...don't touch it, just check it.

Are you sure you used the same cassette size ito 32-34-36 largest cog on it?

Check the wear on your chainrings... if your rings have worn badly (along with your chain and cluster) then you will definitely get some very funky noises from your chainrings.

Just had exactly that problem on my road bike...

I have had something similar on a road bike. I had a SRAM red cluster on a Mavic wheel. The cluster was machined out of a single block, so that only the highest two gears are loose (13,11). The cluster also only had splines on the very end under the lowest gear (26). It is also quite a loose fit on the Mavic hub. The bike started to make noises, such that I thought the bottom bracket was falling apart.

Turns out, that it was just the cluster twisting/torquing about the hub under pressure. The same cluster on an Easton wheel is a snug fit and makes no noise.

A Shimano cluster on the Mavic is quiet, but in this case only the first three gears are fixed. 7 are loose. Also quite a loose fit on the Mavic hub though.

So no real solution, but try a bit of grease on the hub in case the cluster is moving slightly. Since its only the first three and those are commonly fixed together, I think it may be a similar situation.

I had this recently - after replacing cluster and chain - and Cornerz is pretty well spot-on. Try replacing (or just checking) chain-rings.

I have a feeling you guys are up to something on the chain ring being worn. Just for peace of mind I'll replace the smallest rings in front tonight as I've been riding on the smallest one quite a bit just before doing the chain and cassette so the odds are very good that it's done and dusted..

Seems I might have overlooked the wear on my smallest chain ring... What do you guys think?

Very hard when you don't have a new one to compare it to, but check at 0 and 180 degrees to the cranks and compare to 90 and 270 degrees, wear is always worst there, but it does look like you may have a bit of wear there. Middle ring on MTB's usually gets nailed first.

Is the noise just as bad in the big ring? Wear is usually the least there - lowest torque.

The noise only occurs when in the smallest in front and between 34/30/26 at the back  In no other gear selection does this happen thus the reason why I'm completely stumped. To play it safe I've bought a new XT 770 22T front ring which I'll install tonight. Will report back after a test ride!
