Hi Hubbers,

I'm in the process of changing to flat pedals but the left side cleat is giving me a headache and won't budge!

Any idea on how to remove this trouble maker?

What have you been doing up to now with trying to loosen it? Are you familiar with the different thread patterns on the spindles?

Left pedals require clockwise torque to loosen.....that is when pedal is nearest you (between you and the crankarm).

Does this help?

Quite often when the pedal is stuck, brute force alone will not get it loose. Use a rubber/nylon mallet to knock on the spanner you're using, it is usually enough force to get the thing loose. For obvious reasons, when doing this ensure that you're hitting it in the right direction.

Same thing applies to external BBs. Just in both the pedal and BB cases, ensure that the tool/spanner is on firmly so that it wont slip and strip anything.

That's why I love this place...

I was turning it the wrong way! Left pedal loosens and tightens the opposite to what my parents taught me.

It's all sorted and now my flats are on!

Cheers

haahaaaa. Great man. Glad you got it loose.

I broke a Gedore spanner trying to do this on my last bike. Then found out about the left-thread. Now have a spanner set with one odd spanner! You need a long-arm spanner to give you some leverage and also the nylon/rubber mallet will help. You must remember to use a good grease on the thread of the new pedals top stop this happening again.

Vitally important, I replaced my BB (Twice actually, the second time I took it out to grease the heck outve it), my freehub and my rear wheel's bearings just to get rid of an annoying click / creaking noise during pedalling, turns out the threads on the pedals were very dry, greased them up over the weekend and now I enjoy the silence again....

I have a mate that struggled with the same problem. After he ruined two spanners, he welded an old screwdriver to the spindle and bliksemed it with a hammer until he finally gave up and took the bike to the shop. Imagine his face when they told him about the reverse thread
