Stans Sealant - congealed into big lump

At the beginning of January 2014 I replaced the sealant in all our MTB tyres.

During the Dullstroom race my wife complained that her front tyre was fishtailing on the descents.

We stopped and I spun the tyre but it was running true so we carried on.

The next day I opened up the tyre to find this lump of sealant. The bike gets ridden often so it should not have solidified.

Anyone else have a similiar problem?

How often do you use bombs?

Did you use CO2 on the tire at all? It can cause it to congeal if it gets very cold from a bomb.

It's not the cold that causes this. Ammonia is used in sealants to keep the latex in liquid form. It's the CO2 reacting with the ammonia in the sealant. There are nitrogen filled bombs out to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

No CO2 used to inflate tyre. Initial inflation done via compressor and top ups via floor pump.

That is why I dont use stans anymore. Slime Pro, does not seal as quick but it lasts forever and I did not had a flat in the last 3 years.

+1000

In my case Stans does not last long and dries up, SlimePro on the other hand lasts ages!

I have the same issue and no bomb or compressor was used to inflate the tyre. What i would like to know is what is that big booger (ie latex or whatever is inside the Stan's solution) and is the rest of the Stan's that is left in the tyre still effective?

Booger is the stans, stans is the Booger. Whatever is left will still seal. But it probably all dried up.

I might be wrong but I dont think what is left in the wheel is still effective. The reason is that there are latex particles in the fluid and I think that the booger/alien is the latex that have solidified in the fluid..

This is so weird we use Stan's and have never had issues. . Could different climates have an influence on selant?. . We are up here in the platteland.. dry and hot baby?

Thanks, I am new to Tubeless, where can I get this Slime Pro? I am in the East of JHB?

I got some this weekend at The Cycle Hub* at Rietvlei. I could not find any online so when I saw some I grabbed a bottle. And its cheaper than Stans.

*might have the name wrong

Had a similar instance but my Stans was there for much longer and the booger was smaller.

BUT the little bit of liquid left did manage to seal a small thorn / nail type puncture long enough for me to get home
