Cyclist on N1/Marine Dr offramp - riding towards traffic!!

Just want to say to you that you are an idiot of the highest order.

Last night, at 7pm, while driving to Milnerton, taking the offramp from the N1, I was shocked to see a road cyclist riding TOWARDS me. If I didn't swerve, he would be dead.

I have no idea where he was going but saw him jump the kerb soon after, possibly realising his stupidity.

If you are reading this, please try obey the rules of the road,

Oh, this applies to the guys in TEAM kit (not pros) riding on the N1 into and out of town. This is also illegal and there are alternative routes.

Rant over.

Where were they riding? The N1 is not a Freeway until around Koeberg I think......

But I know that you are allowed to ride on the N1 up until the Woodstock turnoff...at least.

when riding alone the cycle lane is not an alternate route, i was nearly kicked off my bike there!

getting out of town, the bit until salt river i exit, didn't we discuss that this was legal to ride?

Well, I'm not sure about the N1 only being a highway from Koeberg, but I do know it is illegal riding towards oncoming traffic...

Not sure how to attach my map but he was on the Marine Drive off-ramp, which is after the Woodstock one.

Maybe the guy was trying to get away from a hi-jack or something....etc....etc

be that as it may...

BUT the being on the N1 there is 100% legal, trust me....

I can back you on this one.

I have often passed traffic officials monitoring this on ramp while riding onto the N1 there and gotten a friendly wave on the way.

The bike path is (very sadly) not a suitable alternative unfortunately when alone due to the "opportunists" around..

OK guys, I'll accept your view that it's OK to ride on that part of the N1.

The point was that he was riding towards oncoming traffic...

over and out.

Agreed, but maybe he had a very good reason... #justsaying

he WAS making a mistake, versus he MIGHT have a very good reason. Why try to undermine the obviousness of the ilegality with guesswork? So essentially, everytime someone is causing *** on the roads, he MUST have a good reason and we should all just nod and move along? what f'ing rubbish. sick of the mentality.

edit: in a *** mood because rear mech is ghost shifting, LBS can't fix it, and tomorrow is hte last pre-argus training ride. ai.

That was me in fact Tomik and I have never been on that route before and missed the correct turn off / offramp. I also thought it may be safer at the time once it happened instead of being hit from behind by a vehicle.

I am sorry Tomik if your whole evening was ruined by a honest mistake I happened to make and you feel better now insulting and abusing me on a forum. I hope your day is now better at my expense.

To the other Hubbers that saw there may be a different outcome to Tomik's abuse. I thank you.

A big thumbs up for confessing. I big thumbs down for your actions. No matter your circumstance, other than a real life threatening situation, I wouldn't recommend cycling into traffic. Unfortunately it reflects on the rest of us as a collective.
