This is what I turn to - nice combo of fast and slow release energy and a whole box of 30 from makro only costs R160

I had the peanut flavour the other day. I might give that go. It was seriously yummy.

I use the GU Roctane gel. A bit pricey but is brilliant.

Yes, find they do help delay the fatigue, but only for long rides (>200km). On a 120km club ride, I don't notice a difference between with Roctane and std GU.

I'm tiring to find other cheeper easy to consume sources of BCAA's.  Any tips.

Definitely getting me some! Cheap and works well enough

Yup. I find half a bar per hour seems to be the right "dosage" for me along with regular powerade ion in 1 bottle and plain water in the other.

The dark chocolate ones are nice and not too sweet. I sometimes have one for an emergency in my back pocket.

I found that I dont cramp up so often. Its got more kick in than the normal (meaning i need less) and the amino acids helps massively against fatigue. My discussion with the GU rep was specifically about the amino acids, and he said the difference betweent the std and roctane is the amino acids. Its expensive though. 3 gels and the roctane hydration packet will cost you about R150.

Hey guys,

Have a question. I also don't buy gels cos I think the prices are ridiculous, usually have dates, baby potatoes, Jungle energy bars, bars one's during my rides.

I was given a crap load of Gu energy gels (100's) by someone (...an event was cancelled and they didn't know what to do with it), so I decided I might as well use/finish it. The first time I'll use it is them for the 94.7 road and MTB events. How often should I take a gel, should I be worried about 'bottoming out'? Should I take them on my training ride's to get used to it?

You may also consider sharing these 100's of GU's with your fellow Hubbers :-)

Take me for instance. I would be quite willing to take 50 or 60 of them off your hands.

Would you like me to PM you my postal address?

Hehe my whole family cycles, mom, dad, brother, me, and we've got lots of cyclist friends... so we've agreed to split them amongst ourselves, sorry.

Still waiting for an answer btw.

You should take it at about every 30 - 45 min. It will be best to try it out on training rides first, to determine if the don't perhaps upset your stomach.

Personally I only use gels on races- but I know they don't give me any cramps- and only after the first hour.

My strategy is half a Jungle bar every 45 mins and then 1 gel for the last 45 minutes.

Washed down with alternating sips from plain water and energy drink every 5 to 10 minutes.

The important thing is to not start too late or else you are playing catch-up and you never will (catch up).

Quick question, why have two different bottles and alternate sips, why not just dilute both and only drink from one, less time spent holding and swapping bottles the better? Or is it a taste thing to just have some every now and then?
