XCO - I'd recommend Nobby Nic front and Rocket Ron rear. Both Snakeskin versions, trailstart at teh front and pacestar at the rear.

Excellent combo for XCO.

I think the OP was (like we mostly see around here) not really referring to XCO when he said "XCO", but rather to XCM...

Also - don't skimp on the casing. The snakeskin / tubeless versions may be heavier, but they're FAR more resilient.

Interestingly, believe it or not, because of my light weight I've managed to get away with a non-Snakeskin (Performance Line) 2.25 Rocket Ron at the back. Most people won't be able to do that though, I'll concede.

Also surprisingly, I'm running a Pacestar (Snakeskin) 2.35 HD in the front, it's been surprisingly impressive on everything other than pebbly hardpack!

You are quite correct. Small error which significantly might change some answers.

Thanks for all the replies thus far. Any which way though, I'm not seeing any 2.0 coming through as a preferred width.

Sharp guys

Didnt really buy 2.2's before, tyring to keep it kind of a light xc rig, so maybe what im looking for is the biggest 2.2 with best rolling resistance ?

Just slapped on my 2 unused MK 2.2's they seem ok rolling wise,.. but there's a fair bit of room still maybe a fingers worth either side, might not be enough for a 2.3.

Continental in general and especially the MK are renowned for being well under size, apparently it's because they include the knobs in their size measurement. But for some reason the MK 2.4 is apparently quite close to actually being 2.4

Do you guys find you get the most pinch flats on the front or back, me definitely on the back, rode a paper thin none tubeless Nevegal 2.35 setup ghetto tubeless on the front and never pinched it or came close but the UST crossmarks on the back got pinched twice.

Ye the 2.4's MK's used to fit my trance nicely

mostly pinch on the back. always when pressure was on the low side. I like to run a little lower pressure for the increased traction, but when hitting the downs (specifically Kingskloof up here, which has very rocky descents) i have pinched the rear on three occasions. 2 Geax suagaro(sp??) and I cant remember what the other one was.

I bumped up my pressure since, as I hate walking out of that place, it's terrible hiking in cleats, and the terrain is such that is is necessary to carry the bike.

What pressure do you ride with?

had the rear at 1.8. But pressure may have dropped because I am lazy and only check pressure when the tyres look flat....or when i feel bouncy on the seat.

Recently I check pressure a bit more often, and ride at about 2bar on the rear. 1.8 front.

Is that tubed or tubeless?

Tubeless.

And to update above info: That was on 26inch Dual suspension bike.

Now on 29er with 2.3 front and 2.25 rear. Front running 1.5 to 1.8 bar and rear between 1.8 and 2.0 (the harder pressure for the more rocky terrain.) This on a Rigid Hardtail.

Only had a pinch flat once on the rear on the rigid, attributable to incorrect line choice and body position.

Or: Ardent front, Monorail rear. UST versions.

OR: WTB Wolverine front & rear. UST versions.

They will allow you to go so much harder into the soft loamy stuff.

What do recommend for trails/am riding? Currently run mountain king 2.4 front and back.

Magic Mary & Rock Razor in summer, Magic & Hans in winter (but the Hans rolls REALLY slowly on the back)

or

Onza Ibex front / Canis rear.

Oh - if you want to stay Conti, then the Der Kaiser is getting good reviews

How long is a piece of string?

We're in the fortunate position of having a hell of a lot of choice nowadays in terms of quality MTB tyres. You'll get a 100 different responses from a 100 different riders.

Your brand preference, budget and experience should be your guide in choosing.

Have a look at the riding you're doing and let that be the starting point in choosing new rubber.

Edit: Saw the "traills/am". My choice would be Maxxis High Roller II. Bags of grip. Can even pair it with an Ardent at the back for faster rolling.

Well that's the problem, too much choice and getting it wrong can be expensive but I get your point.

Mainly ride rietvlei as it's local for me.

The Ibex/Canes seems to be a popular choice theses days. Might have a look at that.
