Morning,

I'm looking for a spot to go camping for a weekend with MTB trails close by. I'm from Joburg so preferably North of Joburg, as it is getting cold now, & not too far as I don't want to spend most of the time driving.

Anyone know of a good spot or a website to look up?

Thanks!

i'm piggy backing your thread cause i also want to know. but then if you camp, where do you lock your bike?

mountain sanctuary is an option I think, last time i camped there saw some guys going off on their bikes - don't know details about the routes though (although the hiking itself was rather hard core so I imagine climbing legs required as well) - but a swim in those pools would be worth it

When I still rode MTB, I used Mountain Sanctuary often.

Locking the bike was easy, cause I just stuck it in the back of my truck.

Now, I've sold the truck, so if I was to do it again, I'd put the MTB in the boot. Or lock the bike rack to the towbar, and lock the bike to that.

why'd you stop?

if i were to do it in my car i'd have to take both wheels to fit my bike in my car :-(

another reason i need to buy a new car with towbar asap ..

how hard is moutain sanctuary to ride for a noob? distances? are the trails clearly marked, do you have to pay someone somewhere or do you just go?

The Monster can be tough, as can Breedts Nek. If you're brave and fit, you can ride down to Van Gaalen and back.

Sondela close to Warmbad is very nice. The camping facilities are excellent and the routes very nice, although not technical at all. It is, however, very nice to spot giraffes, kudus, vlakvarke, etc. whilst out on a ride - and it includes plenty of single track.

That is true.....if you stick to the bottom section of the reserve. Once you are at the top part with all the rocks and sand.......that is when the fun starts (or do some of the single track at carzy speed and dogde the Vlakvark holes).

If interested: (June 2014)

I missed the rocks, but the sand in the top section is hectic! Had a good laugh with my wife as I was shouting out obstacles in the singe track as we went along. At one stage I was going:"Gat, gat, gat, gat!!!!" in quick succession.

Went back the next day and nailed it on my own - truly great fun!

Also great for family rides and I could introduce them to night rides as well.
