Seems that stage races are more and more moving to GPS tracking / tracks.

What with it being the time of the year that this hourly paid person takes time off for family holiday / sani2c and has no income, what's the cheapest GPS unit that can do this stuff?

Probably garmin edge 500....since the 510 came out, you will be able to pick one up for a song

I have the Edge 500, it is a great device, but a horrible navigator.

The Garmin eTrex 10 is an awesome navigator, it's designed for hiking, but you can get a handle bar mount for it, and uses AA batteries so you can carry spare. Retails for around R1300 from Kalahari.com

PowerTap Joule GPS, R2995.00 for the head unit alone or R3695.00 for the head unit with PowerCal, the HR based Power Calculator

Looks like the eTrex 10 only has a basic world map however and not capable of loading GarMaps or Tracks For africa

That's correct, if you want to purely follow a downloaded track (GPX), that is exactly what it does, and it's all I've ever needed, you can immediately see if you go a few meters off course. If you want base maps you can go for the eTrex 20 (R2200), or eTrex 30 (R2800).
