I doubt that the answer lies in dehydration - surely he dehydrates on the IDT as well. A scarce condition where you get vascular type headaches (similar to migraine) has been described. This would be from the extreme extension of the neck when riding low in a racing position. It is normal to sit slightly more upright when you are indoors because the wind plays no role. A good setup could help but ultimately you may have to change your position and maybe look at your helmet as well as your sunnies on your temples.

since the necro has already happened- this response from 2014 explains my sole cause of my headaches during and after riding. It started after a car accident, permanent neck spasm and elevation adrenaline, so 1 hr in and legs are the least of the pain! Has anyone dealt with such a case?

Quite a thread revival - 4 years.

Nutrition science has moved on quite a bit. BTW i have since dumped all sugary drinks and run on Keto drinks - work a charm. No sugar dip after  a ride and recovery and blood sugar much better. These aren't cheap but they work.

What are Keto drinks ?

Ok another thing that I find realy helps is taking Feri med iron pills two days before. This helps when after the ride three hours later my blood pressure used to drop but it seems a bit better. It’s definalty not my bike set up of my glasses of helmet. These headaches were so severe that headache pills did nothing.

I used to suffer from a headache a few hours after a ride. I am not a coffee drinker but one morning we stopped at a coffee shop during the ride so I joined in for a cup.

No headache that afternoon.

My doctor confirmed that it was the caffeine which stabilized my blood pressure so there was less of a drop in pressure after riding.

Liquorice apparently also helps if taking during the ride.

Get your eyes checked mate. If your eyes are straining especially with changing light conditions you going to suffer. Also worth going for a bikefit checkup. You may need a setting tweeked a little bit. Good luck and hope you get sorted.

I may have found the cure for some!

I no loner have any sugar drinks or rehydrate with sugars. I don’t drink coke in the race and I only use Zero hydrate pills. I don’t have sugars after either. I have bananas and date balls , water and my Zero hyradtion pills. NO SUGAR , I also cut out all cream, milk, butter and dairy products the day before and for a few hours after. This reduces chances of sines headaches.

I am cured!!!!! I nearly died from the pain. PLEASE TRY THIS.

Yip, thats it!

My headaches have lessened over the years of riding...but think heredity factors also apply!

I think it also could have something to do with blood pressure and blood viscosity*.

I've done the bike fit, got good riding glasses but think the extended period of the neck stretched in an unnatural angle and lack of adequate neck stretching before the ride also contribute greatly.

My remedy is neck exercising & stretching prior to the ride and if I get a slight headache then I take half a Disprin and a fish oil tablet and find it settles after about half an hour. (*Both thin the blood).

Also a self massage of the muscles going from top of shoulders to side of neck also works well.

(I normally don't do meds but find this works for me)

Forgot to mention...bought an indoor rower and that has taken away the headaches...if I use it at least twice in the week (20-30 mins a session) before my main Saturday ride then don't get a headache!
