70.3 Durban is the 2nd August 2015

Awesome, with my last ultru tri in Durban being last century +/- late 90's i would love to return to Durbs for a 70.3... its a lekker sea swim there.

First things first, get my arse in gear for Rapperswil 70.3 in June

Well done to all the guys & girls who finished EL and better luck at the next one for those who could not finish.

Hi,

Please don't resign the Hub too. I would very much like to hear about the European races. I started with a little saving scheme some time ago and will get a annual payout from 2017 forward. It is intended for travel holidays for the family, and we agreed that the first week of each trip will have an IM race in it  Got to know which ones are worth it though.

Try to do Nice first, pretty please  :whistling:

It was my first triathlon and first half marathon. Managed a 6h17 which I'm very proud of considering where I was physically two years ago... I was fat and nasty!

I'm not sure why no one went to claim world champs slots, but I went with my colleague who had a category top five. Owing to lack of numbers at the allocation... I'm going to Austria!

Big thanks again to king Elton for lending me his bike computer!

Glad I could help :-)

Right, so here is my brief race report...

Firstly, as my first 70.3 SA in EL (although I've done the full IM twice and many other half distance races) I was pleasantly suprised.  Yes, the beachfront might not be as nice as Durbs, but Durbs has an economy 100x that of EL.  The promenade was generally clean and well maintained (unlike the Durb's beachfront at TriRock, which looked like a rubbish tip after half the local population had a party the night before and left the place looking disgusting...).  The locals were very friendly and welcoming, and made us athletes feel special - especially the random chap who said hello and had a chat with me at Frieslands waiting for a milkshake!  I don't think the place is sad, unless you expect more of it.  EL has its own charm and I will go back...

As for the race, the swim was great, even though a little rough and chilly.  I have to say this was probably the nicest swim in terms of contact and "washing mashines" out of any triathlon I have ever done.  I started in wave 3, and had wanted to start on the right hand side to avoid contact and stay wide of the first turn.  Unfortunately (or forutnately) 75% of people in my wave had the same idea, so the right side was packed.  I decided to therefore start myself in the middle where it was less crowded and take my chances - I got to the front and when the horn went off bolted as fast as I could.  Doing a few dolphin dives through the surf, I looked around me and there were maybe 5 other guys with me - I could see the pack on the right side closing, but managed to get to the first bouy well enough ahead of the masses (we must have caught a current!) and I turned in maybe the top-15!  Thereafter I settled into my rythm and the faster swimmers started passing, but I dont' think I had one touch of contact the whole swim, even around the turns.  Maybe it was more of a bun fight further back, but for me it was great - well done to the other swimmers!  I just found it difficult to follow anyone on the swim due to the chop. I would be on someon'e toes for a few metres, and next thing they would be a metre or two away after a swell.  I just resigned myself that it would be difficult drafting in the conditions so swam my own pace, coming out in just over 30 minutes, around 40th in my AG.

Had a great transition and onto the bike.  Well done to the marshalls who rode up Hemingways hill giving friendly reminders to all the slower people from the wave in front (I could see were relative novices) to keep right and out the way, and I didn't see any blatant drafting.  The first hour or so I was able to hit my target power, but as the wind and heat started rising I started feeling more and more drained and the power dropped.  Got to the turn around in 1h38, turned and bolted home in 1h12!  My bottles got disgustingly hot, but forced myself to drink them and took on more water at each aid station. Managed to move up to 13th on the bike.  My only complaint was some NOB from the wave in front that would speed up when I came to overtake him (after seeing me coming),  then overtake me and slow down again... This went on for a few kms until he fell away on a climb.  Dude - I already had 10 minutes on you and I'm not racing you...

Started the run feeling ok and managed my target pace up to the bottom of bunkers hill.  By the time I got to the top I realised I wouldn't keep my target pace, reassessed and managed things from there, just running at the pace I felt I could manage and taking taking on as much water to cool down and coke as possible.  Had to stop for a pee on the second lap, so happy that I hydrated well in the heat.  Most disheartening was the run back along the promenade into the wind - just felt like I was going no where.  At least I avoided the scorn of the Buccanneers woman by not walking.  Managed to finish the run in 1h37.  I have to say that last 10km was just as difficult and painful as the last 10km of both full IMs that I have done...

Overall time was 5h05, finishing top 50 overall and top 10 in my AG.  I wanted to go under 5hrs, but the conditions and course didn't allow it - the times at that end of the field were 10-15 minutes slower than usual.  Very chuffed and feel like I have unfinished business on one of the most difficult 70.3 courses in the world, if not the toughest on Sunday. As Jodie said, the best adjective she can think of for this race and South Africa in general is "tough". Pretty much sums it up.

Well done to all those that finished, and those who gave it their best.

PS and thanks to all the awesome locals and supporters cheering us on out there in the heat, with the odd welcome hose pipe!

Unfortunately nothing spectacular

Take out an endowment of R1000 per month each year for 5 years (allowing for inflation in subsequent years). At the height of it you pay equivalent of R5000 per month, but then receive an annual payout of around R80k equivalent, if you and your service provider choose wisely....

Watched the hour highlight package on supersport this weekend. Man the sea was rough, bike course hilly and bunker hill on the run twice must have been a killer.

Made me envious of you lot. Well done to all, whether you completed or not.
